Fifth Inning Rally Lifts Lions Past Lady Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – The Delta State softball team struck first early in the bottom of the first inning, but a four-run comeback in the top of the fifth inning allowed the University of North Alabama Lions to seal the win, 5-1, and earn the three-game sweep over DSU at University Field on March 26.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Lady Statesmen scored the first run of the game when Abi Gibson scored on a sac fly by Carah Nunez in the bottom of the first.
  • Starting pitcher Bailie Springfield held the Lions scoreless until the top of fourth when Lexie Norfleet scored the tying run of the game on an RBI single by Hannah Shollenberger.
  • North Alabama used a four-run fifth inning rally to surge ahead. Amy Carden started the rally with a leadoff single, and back-to-back bunt singles loaded the bases for UNA. Shelby Woodard tripled scoring Carden, Destiny Wright and Bailey Nelson to give the Lions a 4-1 lead. Taylor Johnson was called from the bullpen to replace Springfield in the circle, but the damage was done. Reagan Tittle flied out, scoring Woodard for North Alabama's fifth and final run of the game, and a double play finally ended the inning.
  • Johnson was able to hold the Lions at bay, but the Lady Statesmen were unable to find the breakthrough.
  • Starting pitcher Raven Cole earned a no decision. In three innings of work, she gave up one run (earned) on two hits. Hillary Carpenter entered the circle in the bottom of the fourth inning in relief of Cole and earned the win to improve to 12-4. In four innings of work, she allowed only two hits, struck out two and faced 14 batters.
  • Bailie Springfield (5-4) suffered the loss for the Lady Statesmen. In four innings of work, she allowed five runs, all earned, on 10 hits. In three innings of relief, Johnson allowed only one hit.
  • Olivia Dick, Jordan Jones, and Gibson recorded Delta State's four hits of the day.
  • Woodard, Wright and Shollenberger led the Lions at the plate, combining for eight of UNA's 11 hits and four RBIs.

STAT OF THE DAY
  • North Alabama's 11 hits tied the second most the Lady Statesmen pitching staff has sacrificed all season. The last time the Lady Statesmen gave up 11 hits was against North Georgia on Feb. 5, 2017.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Gibson was the only Lady Statesmen to record a hit in all three games. She is currently riding a five-game hitting streak and on base streak.
  • Gibson scored her 14th run of the season. She is third on the team in runs scored.
  • Nunez recorded her sixth RBI of the season and leads the team in sac flies.
  • Going 2-for-3, Dick recorded her third multi-hit game of the season.
  • Gibson, Jones and Mari Alex Sandridge each recorded stolen bases. Jones leads the team in stolen bases with 11.
  • Despite today's loss, Springfield remains in the top 10 for lowest ERA in the GSC.
  • North Alabama holds a 14-3 edge over the last 17 meetings with DSU.
