PENSACOLA, Florida –The Delta State dropped both games of a doubleheader to the University of West Florida on Friday, April 14. The Argonauts won game one 8-2. The Lady Statesmen started to make a comeback in the top of the seventh inning in game two, but the Argos held on to the win, 4-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
- A leadoff walk came back to haunt the Lady Statesmen as the Argonauts struck first in the bottom of the first. After Jacey Castro walked, Meghan Toney singled, putting runners at first and second for UWF. Rhiannon Sassman reached on a muffed throw, and Castro scored the Argos' first run of the game on the error. Toney then scored on a sac fly by Baleigh Boltz, and Sassman scored the Argos' third run of the game on Rachel Wright's RBI single.
- The Argos plated two more runs in the bottom of the second. Castro scored on a sac fly and Stassman scored the Argos's fifth run of the game on an error.
- Coblen Patin scored Delta State's first run of the game on a sac fly by Jordan Jones in the top of the third.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Wright's 2nd RBI single of the game and Jacquelynne Polling's 2 RBI single increased UWF's lead 8-1 over Delta State.
- In the top of the seventh Jones reached on a fielding error, and Kory Watterson scored Delta State's second run on the play, bringing Mari Alex Sandridge up to bat. Sandridge walked, advancing Jones to scoring position, but a double play ended the game, 8-2.
- Starting pitcher Bailie Springfield (7-5) suffered the loss. In 1.2 innings of work, she allowed five runs, two earned, on four hits. In 4.1 innings of relief, Taylor Johnson gave up three runs, all earned, on five hits.
- UWF's Becca Taylor earned the win to improve to 20-6. In 5.0 innings of work, she allowed only one run, earned, on four hits, and struck out four. Taylor Rollison allowed one run, earned, and struck out two in 2.0 innings of relief.
- Patin, Jones, Nowell, and Carlie Vice combined for Delta State's four hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 2
- West Florida took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Rhiannon Stassman scored on a sac fly by Jacey Castro.
- The Argonauts loaded the bases in the bottom of the second with no outs, but Taylor Tucker managed to get out of the game, sacrificing only one run.
- In the top of the fourth, Baleigh Boltz doubled, scoring Tiona Hill for the Argos' third run of the game. Caitlin Steel followed with an RBI single, giving UWF a 4-0.
- Jordan Jones smashed a one-out triple to center field, and scored on a sac fly by Mari Alex Sandridge in the top of the fifth to cut UWF's lead 4-1.
- The Lady Statesmen managed to hold the Argos scoreless through two innings.
- In the top of the seventh, the Lady Statesmen started to make a comeback. Olivia Dick drew a one-out walk, bringing Jones up to the plate. Jones tripled scoring Dick for Delta State's second run of the game. Carah Nunez followed with an RBI single that scored Jones for the third run. But Brittany Taylor was called out at the plate to end the game.
- Starting pitcher Taylor Tucker suffered the loss. Tucker allowed four runs, all earned, on five hits and struck out one. In three innings of relief, Sandridge did not give up any runs, but sacrificed three hits.
- Sarah Maloney (11-2) earned the win for West Florida. Maloney gave up three runs, all earned, on six hits, but struck out seven.
STAT OF THE DAY
The Lady Statesmen recorded a season-high two in triples in game two.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Springfield has not allowed more than five runs in a start in the circle.
- Jones tied her game-high of stolen bases with two in game one. The sophomore left fielder now has 17 to her name this season.
- Jones recorded her sixth multi-RBI game to take the team lead.
- Jones recorded a season-high two triples in game two, and her third of the season to take the team lead. She was the only Lady Statesman to record a hit in both games.
- Jones and Nunez each recorded multi-hit games.
- The Lady Statesmen have scored more runs in today's doubleheader than during last year's entire series against the Argos.
- The two triples the Lady Statesmen pitching staff gave up in game one are the most Delta State has given up in a single game.
- Delta State falls to 5-5 in one-run games.
