Delta State Upsets UWF to Take Finale, 7-3

PENSACOLA, Florida –A pair of 3-RBI doubles by Mari Alex Sandridge and Carah Nunez allowed the Lady Statesmen to surge past the University of West Florida Argonauts and win game three of the series, 7-3, on Saturday, April 15.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the top of the third, Kory Watterson, Olivia Dick, and Jordan Jones singled to load the bases. Mari Alex Sandridge then doubled to left center, driving home Watterson, Dick and Jones to give DSU a 3-0 lead. Sandridge scored Delta State's fourth run of the inning on an RBI single by Carlie Vice.
  • With two outs, the Lady Statesmen loaded the bases again in the top of the fifth. Carah Nunez stepped up to the plate and smashed a bases-clearing double, scoring Watterson, Dick, and Sandridge, to give the Lady Statesmen a 7-0 lead.
  • In the circle, Sandridge held the Argos scoreless and without a hit until the bottom of the fifth. Tiona Hill doubled to start the bottom of the fifth and advanced to third on a fly out. Rachel Wright reached on an error, and Hill scored UWF's first run of the game on the play.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, the Argos began to threaten at the plate. Baleigh Boltz reached on a wild pitch, and Rachel Wright tripled to right center, scoring Boltz for UWF's second run of the game. Catilin Steel followed with a one-out RBI single up the middle to score Wright for the Argos' third run.
  • Sandridge (4-7) earned the win, pitching the entire seven innings. She gave up three runs, all earned, on four hits and struck out three.
  • The Argos used three pitchers to get through the day. Starting pitcher Becca Taylor (20-7) suffered the loss. Taylor gave up four runs, all earned, on seven hits in three innings of work. Taylor Rollison allowed three runs, all earned on one hit in 0.2 innings of work. Sarah Maloney closed out the game, allowing only three hits in 3.1 innings.  
 
STAT OF THE DAY
  • The Lady Statesmen recorded 11 hits on the day, compared to four for West Florida.
 
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Sandridge recorded her sixth multi-RBI game to tie Jones for the team lead.
  • Nunez recorded her fourth multi-RBI game of the season and first double of the season. She finished the day 3-for-4, tying her season-high in hits.
  • Going 2-for-4, Vice recorded her first career multi-hit game.
  • Jones stole her 18th base of the season, while Watterson recorded her fifth stolen base of the season.
  • The Lady Statesmen surpassed the total hits in last year's series against the Argos.
  • The Lady Statesmen are 12-3 when scoring the first run of the game and 14-3 when out-hitting opponents.
  • The win in game three marks Delta State's first win over UWF since winning 1-0 in 2015 and largest margin of victory over the Argos since the Lady Statesmen won 17-0 in the first round of the 2014 GSC Softball Tournament.

DSU will host Valdosta State University on April 22-23 for the final home series of the season with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, and a single game at noon on Sunday. Prior to the start of Saturday's doubleheader, DSU will honor six seniors on the squad during Senior Day festivities.
