Lady Statesmen Sweep Series from CBU

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Delta State softball team earned its second Gulf South Conference Series sweep of the season taking both games of the doubleheader at Christian Brothers University on April 2, at Bland Field in Memphis, Tenn. Mari Alex Sandridge struck out nine en route to DSU's 3-1 win over the Lady Bucs in game one, while a four-run rally in the top of the fifth during game two allowed the Lady Statesmen to come back from behind and clinch the win, 8-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • In the top of the first, Mari Alex Sandridge homered to center field, giving the Lady Statesmen a 1-0 lead.  
  • In the top of the third, Kristen Mitchell walked to begin the inning and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Kara Lane Nowell. Olivia Dick followed with a hard-hit single up the middle, and Mitchell scored Delta State's second run of the game on a fielding error by the center fielder.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Abby Ferreira scored CBU's lone run of the game on a throwing error by Mari Alex Sandridge.
  • In the top of the sixth, Olivia Dick tripled with one out and scored on a two-out single to the shortstop by Sandridge, putting DSU up 3-1.
  • Sandridge earned the win to improve to 3-6. She gave up one run on four hits, and struck out eight.
  • Jenna Cotter (3-12) suffered the loss. She allowed three runs on four hits and struck out four.  
  • At the plate for the Lady Bucs, Toni Rizzo, Olivia Parsels, Maddi Welch and Ferreira combined for CBU's four hits.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 2
  • The Lady Bucs struck first as Amber Johnson scored on an illegal pitch in the bottom of the first to give CBU the 1-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Bucs added an insurance run when Julia Schassburger scored on a dropped fly, making the score 2-0 for CBU.
  • The Lady Statesmen rallied back in the top of the fifth. Colben Patin reached on a muffed throw, and back-to-back bunt singles loaded the bases for Mari Alex Sandridge. Sandridge singled up the middle, scoring Olivia Dick for Delta State's first run of the inning. Zoeller tied the game 2-2 with an RBI single. Carah Nunez followed with a single up the middle that plated Sandridge and Jones for the third and fourth runs of the game.
  • In the top of the seventh, Abi Gibson singled to shortstop with bases loaded, plating Zoeller for DSU's fifth run of the game. With bases still loaded, Kara Lane Nowell smashed a two-RBI double to put the Lady Statesmen up, 7-2. Dick followed with an RBI single that scored Gibson for Delta State's eighth and final run of the game.    
  • Starting pitcher Taylor Tucker earned a no decision. In three innings of work, Tucker allowed one run (earned) on three hits. Brittany Taylor (2-1) earned the win. Taylor gave up one run on one hit and recorded a strikeout. Sandridge gave up two hits and recorded three strikeouts in three innings of work to earn the save.  
  • Julia Schassburger (3-11) suffered the loss for CBU. In six innings, she gave up five runs, four earned, on 10 hits. In one inning of relief, Sierra Anderson allowed three runs, all earned, on five hits.  
  • CBU tallied seven hits in 29 at bats.
 
STAT OF THE DAY
  • Delta State's 15 hits in game two are a new season high.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • The Lady Statesmen earned their second Gulf South Series win of the season and sweep of the season. Delta State moves to 10th in GSC standings.
  • The Lady Statesmen improve to 8-3 when scoring the first run of the game.
  • Sandridge's home run in game one was her fourth of the season and her second of the series. She leads the team in home runs.
  • Sandridge recorded her fourth multi-RBI game of the season and fifth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Dick recorded her first career triple as a Lady Statesman, and the second triple of the series. She also recorded her fifth multi-hit game of the season.  
  • Nunez recorded her third multi-RBI game of the season.
  • Sandridge's nine strikeouts are a career-high. She now leads the Lady Statesmen pitching staff in most strikeouts in a single game. She earned her first career save in game two.
  • Jones recorded her 12th stolen base of the season in game two to take the team lead.
  • Hannah Salmon recorded her first hit as a Lady Statesman in game two.

The Lady Statesmen will travel to Montgomery, Ala., for a midweek doubleheader against Auburn University at Montgomery on Wednesday, April 5 beginning at 2 p.m.
