CLEVELAND, Mississippi – After dropping game one 9-0, the Delta State softball team bounced back to win game two, 4-1, over Shorter University and split the doubleheader on Saturday, April 8, at University Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Shorter got the offense going with a two-RBI double in the top of the first that gave the Lady Hawks a 2-0 lead.
- The Lady Hawks plated two more runs in the top of the second. Tiffany Holland's RBI single drove in Taylor Martin for the third run of the game, and Carriker scored Shorter's fourth run on a sac fly.
- RBI groundouts in the top of the third and fifth innings extended the Lady Hawks' lead 6-0.
- In the top of the sixth, Ashley Langel scored on an RBI ground out by Maddie Hunt. The Lady Hawks sealed the win with a two-run home run by Ericka Bynum.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Colben Patin drew a one-out walk, and Kristen Mitchell got on base with a two-out single, but a strikeout ended the game in six innings via the mercy rule.
- The Lady Statesmen combined for only four hits, but had their best chance of making a comeback in the bottom of the fourth when they loaded the bases with two outs.
- Payton Lippert (9-6) pitched the shutout for Shorter. She faced 27 Lady Statesmen, but gave up only four hits.
- Starting pitcher Mari Alex Sandridge (3-7) suffered the loss for Delta State. Sandridge gave up four runs, two earned, on two hits in 1.2 innings of work. Taylor Tucker entered the circle in relief of Sandridge in the top of the second. In 4.1 innings, Tucker allowed five runs, four earned, on three hits.
- At the plate for the Lady Hawks, Holland, Bynum, and Kameron Carter, combined for Shorter's five hits and six RBIs.
- Abi Gibson was the only Lady Statesman to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 2
- The game remained scoreless until the top of the second when Carter scored on a fielder's choice to give the Lady Hawks a 1-0 lead.
- Delta State rallied back to take the lead in the bottom of the second. Madison Zoeller singled to left field, and advanced to second on an error, and Carah Nunez scored on the play to tie the game 1-1. Colben Patin's RBI double put the Lady Statesmen up 2-1.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Mari Alex Sandridge's two-run home run put the Lady Statesmen up 4-1.
- In the circle for the Lady Statesmen, Bailie Springfield went the long haul to earn her seventh win of the season. She allowed one run on two hits and struck out three.
- Hannah Draper suffered the loss for Shorter. In five innings of work, she allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits. In one inning of relief, Kaeli Clark gave up a hit, but recorded a strike out.
- At the plate for Shorter, Maddie Hunt and Ericka Bynum combined for Shorter's two hits in the game, while Martin had the lone RBI.
- All but four Lady Statesmen recorded a hit, but Sandridge and Patin led the offense in game two, each recording a hit and three of Delta State's four RBIs.
STAT OF THE DAY
- Delta State tallied 10 hits on the day, while Shorter recorded seven.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- In game one, the Lady Hawks scored a run in every inning, but the fourth. The nine runs the Lady Statesmen pitching staff allowed tied the second-most an opponent has scored against DSU in the season.
- Sandridge's home run in game two was her fifth of the season. She leads the team in home runs. She also recorded her fifth multi-RBI game of the season.
- The two hits Springfield sacrificed in game two tied her second season-lowest as a starting pitcher.
- As part of a national breast cancer awareness day, the Lady Statesmen and Lady Hawks wore special breast cancer awareness jerseys in honor of Missy Frost, head coach of the University of Indianapolis softball team, and all women diagnosed with breast cancer.
- Patin recorded her second double of the season and third RBI of the season.
- Jordan Jones swiped her 13th bag of the season. She currently leads the team in stolen bases.
- Carlie Vice recorded her first stolen base of the season.
