Clutch Hitting Leads Lady Statesmen Past Lady Hawks for Series Win

CLEVELAND, Mississippi –Clutch power hitting in the bottom of the sixth allowed the Lady Statesmen to come from behind and win game three of the series, 6-3, against Shorter University on Sunday, April 9, at University Field. The Lady Statesmen belted four home runs, three in the sixth, to bounce back and earn the series win over the Lady Hawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Shorter struck first. Dani Lukas' 2-RBI double and Savannah Thomas' RBI single gave the Lady Hawks a 3-0 lead.   
  • Mari Alex Sandridge put Delta State on the board with a solo shot to right center, cutting the Lady Hawks' lead, 3-1.
  • The Lady Hawks began to threaten with runners in scoring position with two outs in the top of the sixth, but a fly out to center ended the threat.
  • The bats came alive for the Lady Statesmen in the bottom of the sixth, as they powered through a five-run rally to take the lead. Carah Nunez started the rally with a home run to right field. Madison Zoeller homered to right field, tying the game 3-3. Carlie Vice drew a one-out walk, and Colben Patin singled, advancing Vice to scoring positon. Both Vice and Patin advanced bases on a wild pitch, and Vice scored Delta State's fourth run of the game on a sac-fly by Kara Lane Nowell to give the Lady Statesmen the lead. Olivia Dick smashed a two-run bomb over the fence, to put Delta State up 6-3.
  • A two-out single from Tiffany Hunt gave the Lady Hawks a baserunner in the top of the seventh, but Taylor Johnson shut down the inning.  
  • Johnson earned her third win of the season to improve to 3-4. In 3.2 innings of work, Johnson faced 15 batters, but did not give up any runs and allowed only two hits. She entered the circle in relief of starting pitcher Bailie Springfield in the top of the fourth who earned a no-decision after giving up three runs, all earned, on six hits in 3.1 innings of work.
  • The Lady Hawks used two pitchers to get through the match, but Kaeli Clark (7-6) suffered the loss for the Lady Hawks in relief. Clark gave up five runs, all earned, on four hits in 2.2 innings of work. Starting pitcher Payton Lippert gave up one run, earned, on four hits in 3.1 innings.
  • Kameron Carter led the Shorter offense going 3-for-3 at the plate and scoring a run, while Zoeller led the Lady Statesmen at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run. Nunez was 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run.
  •  Both teams tallied eight hits on the day, while Shorter at the edge on runners left on base with six compared to five for Delta State.

  • Delta State's four home runs mark a season-high.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Sandridge's home run in game two was her sixth of the season and second of the series. She leads the team in home runs.
  • Zoeller and Nunez each recorded their second home run of the season.
  • Zoeller recorded her ninth multi-hit game of the season to tie Gibson for second on the team, while Nunez recorded her seventh multi-hit game.
  • Dick recorded her first career home run as a Lady Statesman and first multi-RBI game.
  • The Lady Statesmen's 15 assists are second most in a single game this season.
  • Jordan Jones swiped her 15th bag of the season. She currently leads the team in stolen bases.
  • Delta State's four home runs are seventh most in an overall game this season in GSC standings and the third most in a conference-only game.
  • Delta State moves to ninth in GSC standings—one spot away from earning a berth to the GSC Softball Tournament.

The Lady Statesmen will travel to the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Fla., for a three-game GSC series beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, April 14, at 4 p.m. and concluding with a single game on Saturday, April 15, at 12 p.m.
