No. 2 Colorado Mesa Trips Up No. 1 Statesmen

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Chris Ramirez tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts to lead No. 2 Colorado Mesa University to a 6-2 win over No. 1 Delta State University (45-13) in an elimination game at the NCAA Division II World Series on Wednesday at The Ballpark in Grand Prairie (TX).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mavericks got a run on four hits in the third to take a 1-0 lead. Matt Haggerty singled with two outs and scored on a JJ Carr double to right.
  • The game remained 1-0 until the seventh when CMU scored two runs on RBI singles by Zach McLeod and PJ Gonzalez to stretch the lead to 3-0.
  • The Statesmen cut the deficit to 3-1 on a Josh Russell two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Kevin Elcock put the Mavericks up 6-1 with a three-run home run to left in the top of the eighth.
  • Delta State tried to mount a rally in the ninth but managed to score just one run to cut the deficit to 6-2.  Brian Lane and Zack Shannon singled to start the inning. Juwan Burney singled to right to score Lane and put runners at the corners with one out, but CMU starter Chris Ramirez would get a strikeout and a pop out to end the game.
ON THE MOUND
  • Statesmen starter Peyton White (4-2) worked 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts to take the loss.
  • Ramirez (10-1) went the distance, giving up two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts.
NOTEABLES
  • Delta State went 1-2 in the Division II College World Series for the first time since 2005, when the Statesmen opened with a win over Chico State (3-0) before falling to Central Missouri (2-1) and Grand Valley State (11-7).
  • Popovich went 3-for-4 to lead the Statesmen, who were limited to eight hits.
  • Zack Shannon went 1-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 22 games and reached base streak to 52 games.
  • Clay Casey was 0-for-3 to bring a 41-game reached base streak to an end.
