Cosmos Okeke Jr. each collected their first career goals in a Statesmen uniform, and the Delta State University men's soccer team notched a 2-1 win over Ouachita Baptist on Sunday evening at Delta Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Sophomore Matheus Malafaia ripped a shot that narrowly missed the near post just over six minutes into the contest, setting the tone early for DSU.
- The Statesmen just missed on another chance 21 minutes into the contest, as Lewis McClure's header grazed the crossbar and sailed out.
- Delta State outshot Ouachita Baptist 7-3 in the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net as the two teams went to the half scoreless.
- The Green-and-White continued to be aggressive, however, creating a bevy of second half chances.
- Paul Simler struck for the first goal of contest, scoring his first career goal in heading a corner kick from McClure into the back of the net. in the 52nd minute.
- Barely three minutes later, Cosmos Okeke Jr. scored his first goal in a Statesmen uniform, driving home a Myron Duffy cross.
- Delta State's defense clamped down on the Tigers for much of the match, holding them off the scoreboard until the 89th minute.
- Senior Tinashe Chigede brought the Tigers within a goal, scoring his fifth of the season and the 25th goal of his career in an OBU uniform.
- Statesmen goalkeeper Harvey Stevens collected the win in goal, making three saves and running his record to 2-1-1 on the season.
- Tigers goalkeeper Edward Pacheco tallied four saves, but fell to 1-2 on the year.
- The Statesmen outshot Ouachita Baptist 19-11 for the match.
BEYOND THE NUMBERS:
- Delta State is out to its best four-game start to a season since 2012, when the Statesmen started the year 3-1 through the first four contests.
- Duffy registered his second assist of the season, and McClure his first in a Statesmen uniform.
UP NEXT
The Green-and-White travel to Cleveland, Tenn. to take on Lee University at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15 to open up Gulf South Conference play. Delta State then completes the road trip with a game in Rome, Ga. against Shorter University at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17.
