Shorter Uses Late Header to Drop Statesmen 1-0

ROME, Ga. - A header in the 77th minute from Federico Cordiano lifted the Shorter University Hawks to a 1-0 win over the Delta State University men's soccer team in Gulf South Conference action on Sunday at Ben Brady Field in Rome, Ga.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • For the third time in four games, the Statesmen and their opponent played a scoreless first half.
  • Things remained quiet until the 77th minute, when Shorter's Federico Cordiano converted a header to put the home team up 1-0.
  • The Statesmen offense tried to rally late, but ultimately fell short and was shutout on the weekend.
  • Statesmen goalkeeper Harvey Stevens made a pair of saves in goal, but fell to 2-3-1 on the season.
  • Hawks goalkeeper Sean Carpenter grabbed his first win, improving to 1-5 on the season. He made one save in goal.
  • The Hawks outshot Delta State 14-7 for the match.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS:
  • Delta State has been held scoreless in the first half in their last four games, and have been shutout three times this season.

UP NEXT 
The Statesmen are on the road again next weekend in GSC play, with games at Spring Hill (Ala.) and West Florida. The Statesmen travel to Spring Hill for a 3:30 p.m. game on Friday, Sept. 22, and then head to Pensacola, Fla. for a 12:30 p.m. game on Sunday, Sept. 24 against the Argonauts.
