Union Staves Off Delta State 1-0

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Union University Bulldogs snuck away with a 1-0 victory over the the Delta State University men's soccer team on Friday afternoon at Delta Field, as Andre Silva's free kick in the 76th minute downed the Statesmen in Gulf South Conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both teams got some early chances in the first half, but were unable to capitalize as both teams went into the locker room scoreless.
  • Union outshot Delta State 6-4 in the first half of action, and had four corner kicks in the first half to DSU's two.
  • A pair of early shots in the second half set the tone for the Union offense, as the Bulldogs continued to put pressure on the Statesmen defense.
  • That pressure finally paid off, as a Statesmen foul gave away a free kick to the Bulldogs.
  • Andre Silva notched the second goal of his career, converting a free kick to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 76th minute.
  • The Statesmen pressed late, but were unable to find the equalizer as they fell for the fifth time in as many tries.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS:

  • Delta State has been held scoreless in the first half in their last seven games.
  • The Statesmen were issued a pair of yellow cards, as Zachary Breaux and Jordan Whitchurch were each issued cautions.

UP NEXT:

The Statesmen remain at the friendly confines of Delta Field as they welcome the University of West Alabama and Alabama Huntsville to Cleveland on Pig Pickin' weekend. The Statesmen and UWA will kick on Friday, Oct. 6 at 3 p.m. and then face off against the UAH Chargers on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m.
