Statesmen, Harding Play to Scoreless Draw

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Delta State University men's soccer team collected its second shutout in three games, holding Harding University scoreless for 110 minutes in a scoreless draw with the Bisons on Friday afternoon in the home opener at Delta Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The matchup proved to be a physical one from the onset, with both defenses clamping down early. 
  • Harding created a handful of chances in the first half, outshooting Delta State 5-2, but were unable to get on the board.
  • The Statesmen had similar troubles offensively, struggling to sustain much momentum against the Bisons defense.  
  • Both defenses picked up where they left off in the first half, as neither side could break through.
  • The game got chippy late in regulation, as Harding's Matheus Ribeiro and Jeremy Nwonumah each were shown yellow cards in the final five minutes.
  • Harding goalkeeper Michael Wasson collected four saves in facing 12 Delta State shots, including a late save in the second overtime period.
  • Statesmen goalkeeper Harvey Stevens also made four saves in goal, including a save in the 107th minute to help keep the shutout alive.
  • Both sides registered four shots on goal, with Harding outshooting the Statesmen 16-12 for the match.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS:
  • The Statesmen posted their second shutout in three games to open the season, marking the first time in program history that the Green-and-White have shut out an opponent in two of the first three games of the year.

UP NEXT 
The Statesmen are scheduled to host Ouachita Baptist on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. before hitting the road to open up Gulf South Conference play. The Green-and-White will travel to Cleveland, Tenn. to take on Lee University at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15, and then complete the road trip with a game in Rome, Ga. against Shorter University at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17.
