UAH Races Past Lady Statesmen in GSC Opener

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in each half to defeat Delta State University 4-1 in Gulf South Conference action on Friday, Sept. 8 at Delta Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Chargers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third minute, when Sydney Pfankuch's cross found Riley Ridgeway for a tap-in goal.
  • UAH added to its lead in the 33rd minute on Hannah Oglesby's shot from 20 yards out that found the back of the net.
  • Pfankuch put the game away in the 62nd minute, as she received a long pass off a counter attack and was able to beat DSU keeper Ella Hunkin.
  • The Chargers scored their final goal of the game in the 76th minute, when Brynn Colvin took a pass down the right side from Claire Almarez and beat Hunk in far post.
  • DSU scored its lone goal of the game on an 81st minute penalty kick by captain Lakyn Cryder, following a UAH handball.
  • The Lady Statesmen were outshot 15-12, but held a 6-4 advantage in the second half.
  • Hunkin had three saves for DSU, while Megan Buford had two for the visitors.
 
STAT OF THE GAME:
  • Pfankuch was involved in two of the four UAH goals.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Cryder's goal was the seventh of her career.
  • The goal for DSU was the first in 199 minutes.
 
UP NEXT: The Lady Statesmen will conclude their opening weekend of GSC when they play the Tigers of West Alabama on Sunday, Sept. 10. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
