Defense Leads Statesmen to GSC Win Over Montevallo

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Delta State University men's basketball team held the Montevallo Falcons to just 38 points, their lowest total since holding Miles College to 36 in 2012-13, en route to a 53-38 Gulf South Conference win on Saturday night at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

TURNING POINT:
 
  • The Delta State defense held Montevallo to just six points in the final 11:49 of the contest.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • Delta State shot 23-of-52 from the field, shooting 44 percent for the game. DSU knocked down 5-of-19 from three (26 percent) and posted a 2-of-8 mark from the free throw line. 
  • The Falcons went 14-for-39 from the floor, shooting 36 percent for the game. They hit four of their 14 shots from three-point land, and went 6-of-11 from the free throw line as a team.
  • The Green-and-White out-rebounded the Falcons 33-28, including 14-9 on the offensive glass.
  •  DSU outscored the Falcons 18-13 in points off turnovers for the game, and outscored the visitors 18-16 in the paint. 
  • The Green-and-White forced 21 turnovers for the game. 
  • Brett Warner tallied 22 points and added two assists, while PJ Davis had 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and four blocks on the night. 
  • Armon Benford had a game-high and a career-high nine assists, and added seven rebounds and four steals. 
  • Chris Williams and Tyler Brough each had 11 points to lead the Falcons. 

 INSIDE THE FLOW:
 
  • It was a sluggish start offensively for both teams, as they opened the game a combined 1-for-12 from the field as Delta State held a 3-0 lead at the opening media timeout. 
  • The Statesmen held Montevallo scoreless for the game's first 7:45, when Tyler Brough snapped the streak with a three-point basket as DSU led 9-3. 
  • Brough's three-pointer triggered a 15-2 run over the next five minutes, as the Falcons took a 15-11 lead with 7:07 to go in the first half. 
  • Delta State settled in over the final seven minutes of the half, however, as they got a three-pointer and two layups from Cornelius McIntosh. The Statesmen held the Falcons scoreless for the last 2:26 of the half, and used a 13-3 run on the offensive end to take a 24-18 halftime lead. 
  • Montevallo outscored the Statesmen 14-12 in the first eight minutes of the second half, but the Green-and-White held a 36-32 edge with 11:49 to play.
  • Delta State controlled the game the rest of the way, holding the Falcons to six points over the final 11-plus minutes en route to the 53-38 GSC win. 

NOTABLES:
 
  • The Statesmen held their second opponent to less than 40 points in a game under coach Boone, and the first time since holding Miles to 36 in the 2012-13 season.
  • The Green-and-White held Montevallo to 14 field goals, a season-best for the Statesmen defense.
  • DSU forced Montevallo into a season-high 21 turnovers, and the second time this season that they've forced a team into 20-plus turnovers.
  • Coach Jim Boone tied Jim Murrell (102 wins) for third place all-time in Delta State history. 
  • PJ Davis added five rebounds, and he now sits at 661 for his career. He is nine rebounds behind Keith Gardner (670), who sits in 9th place in Statesmen history.
  • Brett Warner tallied 20 or more points for the fourth time this year, scoring 22 in the game.
