Warner, Davis Lead DSU Past Mississippi College 76-64

CLINTON, Miss. - Junior Brett Warner poured in a game high 28 points, PJ Davis added 14 points and six rebounds, and the Delta State University men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 76-64 win over Mississippi College in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday afternoon at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

TURNING POINT:
 
  • The Statesmen went 14-for-27 from the field in the second half against the Choctaws and hit 30 of their 57 shot attempts for the contest in the victory. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • Delta State went 30-for-57 (53 percent) from the field. The Statesmen went 3-of-11 from three-point territory, and knocked down 13-of-15 at the free throw line (87 percent) as a squad.
  • The Choctaws went 21-for-54 (39 percent), and hit just four of their 18 three-point attempts. MC went 18-of-25 (72 percent) from the free throw line. 
  • The Green-and-White edged the Choctaws 33-31 on the glass, and outscored the hosts 38-26 in the paint.
  • Delta State took the lead 4-2 at the 17:30 mark of the first half, and held the lead for the rest of the game. 
  • Brett Warner led the way with 28 points, and PJ Davis added 14 points and six rebounds. Armon Benford added 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block for the visitors.
  • Brandon Boston posted 25 points and 13 rebounds for Mississippi College, a season-high for the sophomore forward.

 INSIDE THE FLOW:
 
  • The Statesmen started out hot, jumping out to a 15-5 advantage at the 13:42 mark of the first half. 
  • Both teams would trade baskets throughout the rest of the first half, but the Statesmen kept the Choctaws from getting much closer in taking a 41-32 lead into the halftime intermission.
  • Brett Warner totaled 17 points at the break, while Brandon Boston has 13 points for the home team.
  • Feeding off a raucous home crowd, Mississippi College used a 12-5 run out of the locker room to pull within two, 46-44, with 14:26 to go in the game.
  • The Green-and-White responded, however, quieted the home crowd with an 8-0 run over the next 2:32 to take a 54-44 lead.
  • Delta State would hold off the Choctaws the rest of the way, pushing the lead out to a game-high 12 points in the closing seconds to secure the 76-54 road win.

NOTABLES:
 
  • Davis went 6-of-6 from the free throw line, moving into 10th place all-time in Delta State history in made free throws (234) and ninth in free throws attempted (343). Davis also sits 10th in rebounds (682), and is tied for ninth in games played (112). Davis also passed Mark Easley (1982-1985) and sits in 10th all-time in field goals made with 465 for his career.
  • Matthew Wilson's five rebounds and seven assists were both career-highs.
  • The game marked the seventh time this season the Statesmen have had three or more players in double-figures.

UP NEXT:

The Statesmen return home on Thursday, Feb. 1 to face West Georgia at 7:30 p.m. for Pack the House night. It will also be Bolivar County Alumni Night. There will be in-game promotions and giveaways, and there will be spirit challenges for all campus organizations will take place to help crown a Spirit Cup winner.
