Kirstin Brown scored a season-high 16 points while
Frederica Haywood chipped in a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to power the Delta State University women's basketball team to a 59-54 victory over Spring Hill College on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at Walter Sillers Coliseum. The victory was also the third in a row for coach
Craig Roden and the Lady Statesmen.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Spring Hill College jumped out to a quick 10-8 lead at the 3:53 mark of the first quarter. The Lady Badgers' Tiffany Valentine led all scorers with six points at the first media timeout.
- The Lady Statesmen ended the first quarter on a 6-2 run to take a 14-12 lead at the end of the period.
- Behind 12 points off turnovers, Delta State built a 10-point lead, 22-12, with 4:54 to play in the second quarter. Frederica Haywood paced the Lady Statesmen with six points during the stretch.
- Carrington Matias's lay-up with 4:10 to play in the first half ended an 8:22 scoring drought for the Badgers and cut the DSU lead to 24-14.
- Back-to-back jumpers by Haywood put the Lady Statesmen up 28-16 at the break. The senior from Mound Bayou led all scorers with 10 points and five rebounds.
- DSU shot 38.9 percent (14-of-36) from the floor while stifling the Lady Badgers on the other end of the court. SHC connected on 25.9 percent (7-of-27) from the floor.
- SHC's Daja Walker dropped in a quick six points while Valentine added three to cut the DDSU lead to 32-25 with 5:56 to play in the third quarter.
- Brown's four points on two jumpers at the end of the third extended DSU's lead back to nine, 40-31.
- The Lady Statesmen built a 15-point lead, 51-36, with 5:16 to play.
- SHC roared back to make it a six-point game, 57-51, with less than a minute to go in the game.
- DSU salted away the remaining time to claim a 59-54 victory.
TURNING POINT
- Delta State's defense held Spring Hill scoreless for 8:22 between the first and second quarters. During that stretch, the Lady Statesmen outscored the Lady Badgers 20-6 to build a 28-16 halftime lead.
STAT OF THE GAME
- The Lady Statesmen dominated play in the paint, outscoring Spring Hill 38-26.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Kirstin Brown's 8-foot jumper with 9:41 to play in the first quarter was the first basket of the 2018-19 campaign at Sillers Coliseum.
- Alondrea Rush inched closer to 1,000 career points with five. The senior from Horn Lake needs 10 points to become the 37th Lady Statesman to accomplish the feat.
- Emesha Chatman also scored in double figures with 12 points.
- Nia Johnson dished out a game-high five assists while scoring eight points.
- Valentine's 14 points led SHC.
