CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University women's basketball team used a huge third quarter by
Nia Johnson, who finished with a team-high 16 points, to claim its sixth straight with a 79-63 victory over LeMoyne-Owen College on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
Frederica Haywood (15),
Quantesha Patterson (14), and
Alondrea Rush (12) joined Johnson in double figures for the Lady Statesmen.
Averyale Joy and Dana Gettis led the Lady Magicians with 11 points apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delta State opened the first quarter with a 5-0 lead on a 3-pointer by Alondrea Rush and a jumper by Frederica Haywood, but LeMoyne-Owen answered with back-to-back 3-pointers by Averyale Joy to take a 6-5 lead with 7:56 to go in the frame.
- A pair of baskets by Lamontazia Blair and Glenda Garner put the Lady Magicians up 10-7 at the 4:53 media timeout.
- Rush's running floater in the lane put the Lady Statesmen up 12-11 with 2:50 remaining in the period.
- LOC used seven first half turnovers to hold a 19-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. The lead changed nine times during the first 10 minutes of action.
- Aliyah Herrod's 12-foot, baseline jumper gave the Lady Statesmen the 20-19 lead to open the second quarter.
- Six points from Quantesha Patterson and four from Haywood extended DSU's lead to five, 30-25, at the 4:49 media timeout.
- Haywood, who led all scorers with 13 first half points, scored the final seven points of the second quarter to send the Lady Statesmen into locker room with a 39-32 lead on the Lady Magicians.
- Nia Johnson's rebound and put-back matched DSU's largest lead of the game, eight points, with 7:46 to go in the third quarter.
- Two turnovers by the Lady Magicians led to a 3-pointer and a lay-up by Johnson to put the Lady Statesmen up 11, 50-39, with 5:12 remaining in the third.
- Johnson continued her hot shooting, scoring seven additional points during a 16-2 run that gave the Lady Statesmen a commanding 57-40 lead with 2:11 left in the third.
- Kaylin Downs jumper in the paint with 1:48 to play in the third ended a 4:07 field goal drought for the Lady Magicians.
- A pair of Herod free throws and one by Patterson made the margin 18 at the end of the third, as Delta State led 62-44.
- At the 4:45 media timeout, DSU had extended its lead to 21, 74-53.
- LOC closed the game on a 10-5 run to make the final 79-63.

- After a closely contest first half, the Lady Statesmen took control of the game with an 16-3 run during a 3:19 span of the third quarter.
