Statesmen Never Trail in Victory Over Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss.– The Delta State University Men's Basketball team jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and never looked back defeating Mississippi College Saturday afternoon 74-65. With the win, the Statesmen improve to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in GSC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Delta State opened the scoring 20 seconds in, with a jumper from Brett Warner.
  • Cedric Harper grabbed the next two buckets for the Statesmen.
  • In the first six minutes DSU pushed the lead out to 11 off of hot shooting in the paint.
  • The Choctaws took advantage of foul trouble for Justin Slocum and Cedric Harper and began to chip away at the lead cutting it down to one 24-23 with eight minutes to go in the first half.
  • The Statesmen responded with a 6-0 run to extend the lead back out to 30-23 and maintained the lead at the half.
  • To start the half, MC again pushed forward and cut the lead back down to one at 42-41 with 17:31 to go in the game.
  • The Statesmen again responded with a 7-2 run to push the lead back out.
  • The Choctaws were held without a field goal from the 10:43 mark until the 2:33 mark.
  • During that run the Statesmen outscored MC 11-3 to pull away for good.
  • Rasheide Bell sank four free throws in the final two minutes to help seal the win.
TURNING POINT
  • In a game of runs, DSU had four 5-0 runs and one 6-0 run.
  • The 11-3 run for the Statesmen in the second half put the Choctaws away for good.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Armen Benford tied a season high eight assists and didn't commit one turnover.
  • Cedric Harper only played eleven minutes but managed to score six points and pull down five rebounds.
  • The Statesmen defense held the Choctaws to a season low 25 rebounds and their second lowest scoring game of the year.
NOTABLES
  • This was the fifth time Delta State has shot over 50% from the floor in a game this season.
  • Bell poured in 17 points which was the second highest of his career for the Green and White.
