Miles rallies for 52-46 win over @DeltaStateMBB

FAIRFIELD, Ala. – Miles College rallied from a 10-point second half deficit to defeat the Delta State University men's basketball team, 52-46, on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at Knox-Windham Gym. Brett Warner (11) and Justin Slocum (10) scored in double figures for the Statesmen while Jeffrey Dockett led Miles and all scorers with 14.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first 10 minutes of Wednesday's contest was marked by tenacious defense, as both teams struggled to get rolling offensively. The Statesmen took an 11-10 lead with 9:17 to play in the first half on Cameron Burkett's layup.
  • Justin Slocum and Armon Benford connected on back-to-back layups to extend DSU's lead to five, 15-10, with 8:25 remaining in the first.
  • Umar Frost's 12-foot jumper ended a 6-0 run for the Statesmen and cut the deficit to three, 15-12, with 7:34 on the clock.
  • Jeffrey Dockett's short jumper ended a 3:41 scoring drought for the Golden Bears, as Miles trailed Delta State 17-16 with 4:16 to play in the half.
  • A 3-pointer by Burkett and a jumper by Slocum allowed the Statesmen to build a 22-18 lead with 2:34 on the clock.
  • Miles closed the half on a 5-1 run to tie the game, 23-23, at halftime. Burkett and Slocum led the Statesmen with five points apiece while Dockett led Miles and all scorers with nine.
  • After both teams started the second half with six points each, the Statesmen raced out to an eight-point advantage, 37-29, with 14:01 to play in the game. Five points from Brett Warner fueled the run.
  • Miles cut the lead to one, 40-39, with 9:14 to go behind a 9-0 run.
  • Robert Jones put Miles ahead, 41-40, on a short jumper with 8:26 on the clock.
  • The Golden Bears extended the lead to three, 43-40, before a pair of Warner free throws made it a one point game with 7:44 to go.
  • Warner's layup with 4:54 to play ended a 7:31 field goal drought for the Statesmen and cut Miles' lead back to one, 45-44.
  • Avery Brown's floater in the lane extended the Golden Bears' leads back to three, 47-44, with 3:31 remaining.
  • After a nearly three minute scoreless streak, Damian Archer put Miles up five, 49-44, with 44.0 seconds to play.
  • Burkett's basket cut the Miles lead to three, 49-46, with 24 seconds on the clock.
  • DSU forced a Golden Bears' turnover with 23 seconds to go, but could not convert on the offensive end of the court.
  • Archer made 1-of-2 free throws with 15 seconds left to make it a four point game, 50-46, and Miles iced the game at the line for the 52-46 victory.             

TURNING POINT
  • Miles held Delta State without a field goal from 12:25 to 4:54 of the second half.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
  • 45.5% - Miles connected on 20-of-44 shots from the field, including 4-of-14 from 3-point range.  

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Despite being tied 23-23 at halftime, DSU led for 15:21 of the first half and only trailed once, 11-10.
  • Miles dished out 11 assists on 20 field goals.
  • The Statesmen defeated Miles, 58-52, on Nov. 17 at Walter Sillers Coliseum in the first meeting this season between the two schools.
  • Wednesday's game was the final non-conference contest of the season for Delta State.
