Late Power Surge Lifts DSU Past Antelopes In Extra Innings

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Darek Sargent and Zack Shannon hit home runs in a five-run 12th inning to propel No. 1 Delta State University (4-1) to a 9-5 win over the University of Nebraska-Kearney (1-4) on Saturday at Clyde Berry Field.
 
Sargent hit a solo home run to lead off the 12th, followed two batters later by a Shannon three-run long ball to cap the inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Zack Shannon single to left and scored on Clay Casey's home run to left.
  • Nebraska-Kearney used a three-run third to take a 3-2 lead. Alex Achtermann delivered a two-run double to tie the game and Achtermann later came home on a Pate Katechis double.
  • Jamell Newson's solo home run to right center tied the game 3-3 in the sixth.
  • The Antelopes loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, only to see Newson make a catch against the left field wall to end the scoring threat.
  • A Josh Russell walk, a David Herrington single and Darek Sargent reaching on a throwing error loaded the bases in the seventh for DSU. Popovich lifted a sac-fly to score Russell and put the Statesmen back in front, 4-3.
  • Brett Young singled and stole second before moving to third on a fly out to right in the bottom of the eighth for UNK. Young would steal home on a pick off attempt to first to tie the game 4-4.
  • The Antelopes appeared to score the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Brett Young was called out for interference when he interfered running to first base on an infield pop up to end the inning.
  • Sargent and Shannon hit home runs in the 12th to break the 4-4 tie. Sargent led off the frame with a solo home run to left and Shannon hit a three-run home run to left to put the Statesmen ahead, 9-4.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Melvin Frazier (2-0) struck out four and scattered four hits in four scoreless innings to earn the win.
  • Jared Bell (0-1) gave up five runs on six hits with two strikeouts as the pitcher of record for the Antelopes.
  • UNK starter Mitchell Robinson gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts over eight innings pitched.
  • Seth Hougesen struck out six while allowing one run on two hits, tossing four innings in relief of starter Seth Birdsong.
 
NOTEABLES
  • Casey's two-run home run in the second was his first of the season and the 18th of his career.
  • Second baseman Darek Sargent went 3-for-4 with a home run in his second career start.
  • David Herrington made his first start at third base, going 2-for-4.
  • Shannon's 12th inning home run was the 21st of his career and second of the season. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native went 2-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
  • Lane finished 2-for-6 with a run scored to round out the Statesmen with multiple hits.
  • Newson's sixth inning solo dinger marked his first career round tripper. He finished with two RBIs.
  • Statesmen pitchers struck out a season-high 15 batters, eclipsing the 13 strikeouts against Nova Southeastern (2.3.18).
