Warner's Buzzer Beater Sinks Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Brett Warner drilled a three-pointer from straight away, with less than a second remaining, to help give the Delta State University men's basketball team a 58-55 victory over Montevallo, on Saturday at Trustmark Arena.

TURNING POINT:
 
  • With the score tied at 55-55 and less than one second left on the clock, Brett Warner rose up from 24-feet out and hit the game-winning three-pointer as Delta State swept the regular season series against Montevallo. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • The Statesmen got 19 points from PJ Davis, who led all scorers, and Matthew Wilson added 15 points, four rebounds, two assists for the Green-and-White.
  • Warner had eight points and three rebounds, and Dietrich Taylor added four points and nine rebounds.
  • Montevallo was led by Chris Williams' 18 points. Tyler Brough added 11 points and five rebounds. 
  • The Statesmen narrowly out-rebounded the Falcons 28-27, including a nine to five on the offensive glass.
  • DSU scored 11 points off of 13 Montevallo turnovers, and outpaced UM 11-2 in second chance points. 
  • Delta State went 24-for-51 (47 percent) for the game, including 6-for-15 from three (40 percent) and 4-for-10 at the free throw line. 
  • Montevallo shot 49 percent (21-for-43) from the floor, and an identical 6-for-15 from three. The Falcons knocked down 7-of-10 from the foul line.

INSIDE THE FLOW:
 
  • Delta State jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the opening six and a half minutes in the contest, taking the six point advantage with 13:35 left in the first half. 
  • Jamar Gilbert hit a three-pointer on the other end, sparking an 18-10 run that saw Montevallo take a 22-20 lead on a Tyler Brough three-pointer with 5:50 to go in the half. 
  • Leading 24-21 at the 3:05 mark of the first half, the Falcons closed the half on a 7-4 spurt that included four points from Chris Williams and another three from Brough, to take a 31-25 lead into the locker room. 
  • A Matthew Wilson layup, a step-back jumper and a transition three-pointer helped Delta State open the second half on a 17-8 run to take a 42-39 lead with 11:38 to play. 
  • The Falcons battled back, tying the game at 48 on a Deshawn Jones three-pointer with 5:12 to play. 
  • A Brett Warner jumper and a PJ Davis layup put Delta State up by four, 54-50, with 2:09 to go in the contest.  
  • Chris Williams responded by hitting a layup to pull the Falcons within two points, and added a driving layup with 15 seconds left and drew a foul. Williams added the free throw to tie it up at 54-54.
  • The Statesmen came down the floor and Brett Warner drilled a three-pointer from straight away with less than a second to play to deliver the win for the Statesmen.

NOTABLES:
 
  • Davis' 19 points pulls him within seven points of passing Gerald Glass (1986-1987), who scored 1,249 for the Statesmen. Davis now sits at 1,243 career points.
  • The Statesmen sweep the regular season series from Montevallo with the win. This is the first time that Delta State has played in Montevallo since 2008, when the Statesmen defeated UM 99-87 on Nov. 24. 
  • Brett Warner nailed the second game-winning shot of his career in a Statesman uniform.

WHO'S NEXT:
 
  • The Statesmen hit the road again for some Valentine's Day basketball, traveling to Memphis, Tenn. on Wednesday, Feb. 14 to visit Christian Brothers at Canale Arena. The two teams will tip-off at 7 p.m.
