Statesmen Bury MC in OT, Grab 79-69 Senior Night Win

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Brett Warner tallied 29 points, PJ Davis added 16 points and nine rebounds as the Delta State University men's basketball team outscored MC 12-2 in overtime to bury Mississippi College 79-69 in the regular season finale at Walter Sillers Coliseum in Gulf South Conference action.

TURNING POINT:
  • The Statesmen outscored the Choctaws 12-2 in overtime to close out the regular season with a 79-69 victory and secure the sixth-seed in the upcoming Gulf South Conference tournament. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • Brett Warner poured in 29 points to lead the Statesmen and went 5-for-8 from downtown. 
  • PJ Davis tallied 16 points and nine rebounds, and Matthew Wilson added 15 points for the home team. 
  • Brandon Boston had 24 points, Xavion Dillon had 20 and Donovan Ham had 12 for the visitors. 
  • DSU out-rebounded MC 44-30, including 14-8 on the offensive glass.
  • MC edged DSU 32-20 in points in the paint, but DSU had an 18-11 advantage in points off turnovers. 
  • Delta State went 25-for-57 (44 percent) from the field, including an 8-for-18 mark from three (44 percent) and went 21-for-27 (78 percent) at the free throw line. 
  • The Choctaws went 27-for-63 (43 percent) from the field and was 5-for-17 (29 percent) from three. MC went 10-for-14 from the free throw line (71 percent) as a team.

INSIDE THE FLOW:
 
  • A pair of Brett Warner three-point baskets sparked the Delta State offense early, as the Statesmen ran out to an 11-3 lead with 15:27 to go in the first half. 
  • DSU continued their hot start, building a 14-point, 25-11 lead with 7:56 remaining in the opening half, as Warner scored 14 of the first 25 points for the Green-and-White.
  • The Choctaws chiseled away over the final seven and a half minutes, as the visitors used a 21-8 run capped by a Davy Fisher jumper as time expired to pull MC within one, 33-32, at the halftime break.
  • The Statesmen and the Choctaws exchanged blows throughout the second half. DSU led by six with 12:52 to go, but MC battled back and tied the game at 53-53 with 7:23 left to go. 
  • With 2:10 to play, the game was tied at 62-63 after a Brandon Boston jumper.
  • Boston's jumper with 1:17 to play gave MC a 64-62 lead. 
  • Matthew Wilson answered with a three-point basket to give DSU a 65-64 lead with 1:00 to play.
  • Antonio Johnson drilled a three-pointer to put MC back on top 67-65 with 41 seconds left. MC had a chance to add to the lead, but Ham's missed free throw with 12 seconds left the door open for DSU. 
  • Matthew Wilson sent the game to OT, as his runner with 2.7 seconds to go knotted the game up at 67-67.
  • In the overtime period, DSU outscored MC 12-2 to take the 79-69 win and grab their first OT win (1-1) on the year. 
NOTABLES:
 
  • PJ Davis, Cameron Monix and Dietrich Taylor were all recognized for their outstanding contributions to the Statesmen basketball program on Senior Night. 
  • Armon Benford tallied at least five points, five rebounds and five assists for the tenth time this season, with five points, 12 rebounds and six assists.

  • The Statesmen travel to Lee University in the first round of the Gulf South Conference on Super Tuesday, Feb. 27, in Cleveland, Tenn. DSU and the Flames will tip at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT.
