Statesmen Beat Valdosta State 10-5, Sweep Series

VALADOSTA, Ga. –  Zack Shannon belted two-home runs to help No. 1/6 Delta State University (11-1, 3-0 GSC) earn an 10-5 win over Valdosta State University (6-8, 0-3 GSC) on Sunday at Billy Grant Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Blazers struck for a run in the bottom of the first. Kendall Herron walked and scored on a Dalton Murray sac-fly to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.
  • Four runs crossed the plate in the second and three in the third as the Statesmen took a 7-1 advantage.
  • Clay Casey walked and with one out, Josh Russell and Emil Ellis singled to load the bases in the third. Justin Nussbaum's single to left scored Casey and Russell. Jason Popovich singled home Nussbaum.
  • Zack Shannon was hit by a pitch and reached second on a fielding error on a Casey grounder to short to begin the fourth. Russell singled and a throwing error by the VSU catcher allowed Casey and Russell to score.
  • Blake Seeley singled and scored when pinch hitter Elias Macias reached on a fielder's choice to trim the DSU lead to 7-2.
  • The two clubs traded lead off solo home runs in the fifth. A Shannon home run to left gave the Statesmen an 8-2 lead before Andrew Williamson's long ball cut the deficit to 8-3.
  • Delta State answered with a run in the top of the sixth. Nussbaum led off with a singled and beat a throw home from second base on a Morgan grounder to increase the lead to 9-3.
  • Shannon capped off the scoring with a solo home run to straight-away center with two outs to make the score
  • Valdosta State cut the lead to 10-5 in the ninth on a two-run home run by Ross Goforth.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • DSU starter Hayden Davey (3-1) allowed three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and six walks in five innings to pick up the win.
  • Hunter Jones (1-1) gave up eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits with four strikeouts to take the loss for VSU.
  • Hunter Riggins tossed two innings with two strikeouts and yield two hits while Jonathan Lindsey had two strikeouts in a scoreless eighth.
  • Jason Lott had a strikeout and gave up two runs in the ninth.

NOTEABLES
  • Shannon's two home runs gives him seven for the season and 26 for his career, tying him with Sonny Clay (1973-76).
  • Popovich, Russell, Ellis and Nussbaum all went 2-for-4 and Morgan had two-RBIs.
  • Shannon finished the day 2-for-4 two home runs, two runs scored and two RBIs.
  • The 10 runs scored marked the seventh time the Statesmen have scored nine or more runs and the 12 hits were the 10th double-digit hit game this season.
  • The Blazers left 11 men on base, including six in scoring position, while the Statesmen left four on base.
  • The series sweep was the first three-game sweep in a GSC series in the 48 games of the all-time series between the two schools.
  • Head coach Mike Kinnison notched career win number 908 (907-289-2).
