JACKSON, Tenn. – No. 1 seed Union outscored the No. 8 seed Delta State University women's basketball team 40-12 in the paint, helping secure a 74-58 victory in the opening round of the GSC VisitSpaceCoast.com Women's Basketball Championship, on Tuesday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.

TURNING POINT:
- After Delta State cut a 17 point Union lead to 53-47 with 8:47 left, the Lady Bulldogs outscored DSU 21-11 the rest of the way.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Takisha Jordan led the Lady Statesmen with 20 points. Alondrea Rush added 17 points, including 14 in the second half to help lead DSU.
- Sara Lytle had 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting to lead Union. The Lady Statesmen held the GSC Player of the Year, Chelsey Shumpert (6-of-19 shooting), to 16 points, which is eight below her season average.
- The Lady Statesmen went 20-for-46 (44 percent) from the floor, but were just 3-for-13 (23 percent) from three-point territory. Union finished 30-for-64 (47 percent) from the floor. DSU held Union to just 4-of-21 (19 percent) fro three-point range. The Lady Bulldogs were 26-of-43 from inside the three point stripe.
- The Lady Statesmen had a slim 30-28 edge on the boards.
- Union's bench scored 24 points, compared to just two for DSU.
INSIDE THE FLOW:
- Neither team led by more than four points in a closely contested opening quarter that saw the hosts take a 14-12 lead after the first 10 minutes.
- After a jumper by Alexis Ross tied the game at 14 with 9:35 left in the half, the Lady Bulldogs went on a 9-1 run to take a 23-15 lead with 6:33 left in the half.
- The Lady Statesmen responded with four straight points to cut the lead to 23-19 with 4:59 left in the second quarter.
- Union went on a 12-3 run, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor the rest of the way, to take a 35-23 lead into halftime.
- The Lady Bulldogs led by as many as 17 (43-36) in the third quarter, but the Lady Statesmen outscored the hosts 15-8 the rest of the way to cut the lead to 51-41 going into the fourth quarter.
- DSU got to within 53-47 with 8:47 left, but Union outscored the Lady Statesmen 21-11 the rest of the way to secure the victory.
NOTABLES:
- The loss gave Delta State its first losing season since going 13-16 in 1982-83.
- The 74 points scored by Union tied for the most that the Lady Statesmen have given up this season (North Alabama 1.4.18).
- Jordan led the Lady Statesmen in scoring for the 10th time this season and for the fourth straight contest.
