Lady Statesmen Drop Pair of One Run Games at Charger Chillout

HUNTSVILLE, Ala -- The Delta State University softball team dropped a pair of one run contests on day one of the UAH Charger Chillout, on Thursday, at the Metro Kiwanis Sportsplex.

GAME 1: HENDERSON STATE 4, DELTA STATE 3
 
Game Changer
- Trialing 4-3, with a pair of runners on base, in the bottom the fifth Henderson State retired three straight DSU batters to keep the lead.
 
Inside the Box Score
- The Lady Statesmen were outhit 10-6.
- Mari Alex Sandridge was the lone DSU player to record multiple hits, finishing 2-for-2.
- Kelly Byrd reached base safely all three times, as she was hit by two pitches and had a single.
- Carli Vice recorded a double in the first inning, which was the lone extra base hit for the Lady Statesmen. 
- The Lady Reddies left 11 runners on base, compared to eight for DSU.
- Nicole Fullilove (1-1) allowed four runs on 10 hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

 Key Plays
- HSU plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on an infield single, as Bethany Allen scored from third and Alexis Morton took advantage of Kailyn Lofton recovering from a diving 
  effort at second base.
- The Lady Statesmen answered in the bottom of the inning on a two-RBI double by Carli Vice that came with two outs.
- Henderson State answered in the second when Olivia Trapp scored from first on a double by Allen.
- The Lady Statesmen tied the game at three in the fifth on an RBI single up the middle by Mallory Myers.
- Kailey Reese gave HSU the lead for good in the fifth when her sacrifice fly scored Maddie Green. 
- The Lady Statesmen had the tying run on second in the bottom of the seventh, but hit into a double play to end the game.
 
Noteworthy
- DSU is now 2-2 this season in games decided by one run.
- The two-RBI double by Vice marked the second time this season that she has tied a game with a double.
- With their two runs in the first inning, the Lady Statesmen snapped a streak of 14.2 innings without scoring a run.

 
Game 2: No. 14 Missouri-St. Louis 3, Delta State 2
 
Game Changer
- The Lady Statesmen trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, and had the bases loaded with no outs but failed to score the tying run.
 
Inside the Box Score
- The Lady Statesmen outhit UMSL 12-10.
- Marissa Landrum went 3-for-4, recording her first hits, while also driving in her first run as a Lady Statesman.
- Sandridge (2-for-4) finished with multiple hits for the second straight game.
- Byrd, who had a triple, was also hit by a pitch for the second straight game.
- Taylor Johnson (2-2) allowed two runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Madison Bigner struck out three batters in two innings of scoreless relief
 
Key Plays
- Both teams scored in the second inning, as the Tritons took advantage of an error and Abi Gibson scored on an RBI single by Landrum.
- After UMSL took a 2-1 lead with an RBI single in the fifth, DSU answered when Gibson followed Byrd's triple with a single through the right side.
- The Tritons took the lead for good in the sixth when they followed a leadoff triple with an RBI double.
- DSU had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the inning, but could not capitalize.
- The Lady Statesmen were close to tying the game in the bottom of the seventh, but had a runner thrown out at the plate by shortstop Reagan Osborn.

Noteworthy
- The 12 hits equaled the highest total of the season for the Lady Statesmen.
- Byrd, who reached base safely in five of her first six trips to the plate recorded the first triple of her career.

Next Time Out
- On day two of the UAH Charger Chillout, the Lady Statesmen are scheduled to face No. 6 Southern Indiana at 2 p.m. and will wrap up the day with Indianapolis at 4 p.m.
