West Georgia Holds Off Lady Statesmen

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- West Georgia had six hits for extra bases, including a pair of home runs, and held on for a 6-3 win over the Delta State University softball team on Saturday at University Softball Field. With the victory, UWG earned a 2-1 series victory.

FINAL SCORE: WEST GEORGIA 6 (14-7, 7-5 GSC), DELTA STATE 3 (12-14, 5-7 GSC)
 
GAME CHANGER:
- West Georgia had nine hits, including six for extra bases.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Statesmen outhit UWG 12-9.
- Mallory Myers, Madison Bigner and Jordan Jones had two hits apiece for DSU.
- Jones led the Lady Statesmen with a home run and two RBIs.
- Kelly Byrd was hit by a pitch three times.
- Three DSU pitchers allowed two runs apiece. Starting pitcher Mari Alex Sandridge (1-7) allowed two runs on four hits in 2.2 innings.

KEY PLAYS:
- The Wolves took a 1-0 lead, in the opening frame, on a wild pitch by Sandridge.
- After UWG gained a 2-0 advantage in the third inning, Jones hit a solo home run in the fourth to put the Lady Statesmen on the board.
- The Wolves hit a two-run home run in the fourth and a solo shot in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.
- DSU added a pair of runs in the sixth on Jones' double and an RBI groundout by Taylor Johnson.
- Also in the sixth, UWG ended the DSU threat with a double play. 
- The Wolves added a run in the seventh on a triple and a throwing error.
 
NOTEWORTHY:
- Jones now has three multi-RBI games.
- Dating back to last season, DSU has now dropped five out of its last six conference series.
- The Lady Statesmen have lost four games when outhitting their opponents.
- Gibson has now hit safely in five straight games.
- The RBI groundout by Johnson came in her first career at-bat.

- The Lady Statesmen are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, March 17 when they travel to West Alabama for a Gulf South Conference series. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for Noon.
