Lady Statesmen Split Pair of Contests At West Alabama

Livingston, Ala. -- The Delta State University softball team picked up a 7-4 come-from-behind victory to earn a doubleheader split with West Alabama, in Gulf South Conference action, on Thursday at the West Alabama Softball Field. UWA earned a 8-0 (6) victory in the opener.

GAME 1: WEST ALABAMA 8, DELTA STATE 0 (6)
 
GAME CHANGER:
- The Tigers sent 9 batters to the plate, scoring 3 runs on 4 hits, in the top of the first inning.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- West Alabama collected 8 hits, while DSU had six. 
- Abi Gibson and Kelly Byrd both were 2-for-3 the only players with multiple hits.
- All six hits for the Lady Statesmen were singles.
- DSU got a runner on in each inning but could not bring a run across.
- UWA pitchers forced nine DSU ground outs.

KEY PLAYS:
- In the top of the first inning, the Lady Statesmen had runners on second and third with one out, but failed to get a run across.
- UWA scored three runs in the first, highlighted by three RBI singles.

GAME CHANGER:
- Trailing 3-2 in the fifth inning, the Lady Statesmen scored three runs on five hits. Jordan Jones had an RBI single and scored on a double by Carlie Vice.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Statesmen had a 12-11 advantage in hits.
- Kelly Byrd led the Lady Statesmen, going two-for-three at the plate with a two run home run and a triple. Jones and Vice both two hits apiece.
- DSU took advantage of three errors from UWA to bring across two runs.
- Nicole Fullilove (4-2) pitched six innings giving up 10 hits.
- Madison Bigner worked the seventh inning to pick up her first career save.

KEY PLAYS:
- DSU opened the scoring in the second inning on an two run home run from Byrd.
- UWA answered in the bottom of the second with two doubles to tie the game.
- UWA took the lead in the fourth on a two out RBI double.

- Byrd now leads the Lady Statesmen with six multiple-RBI games. DSU is 11-1 when Byrd drives in a run.
- The Lady Statesmen have now won four games when trailing in the fifth inning, or later.
