Auburn Montgomery Pitches Way to Victory Over Lady Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Auburn Montgomery pitcher Chanel Newcomer allowed just two hits in a 3-0 victory over the Delta State University softball team, in Gulf South Conference action, on Sunday at University Field. With the victory, the AUM claimed the series 2-1.

GAME CHANGER:
- After allowing a hit in the first inning, Newcomer did not surrender another until the bottom of the seventh.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Statesmen were outhit 5-2.
- Kelly Byrd and Marissa Landrum had the only hits for DSU.
- Mari Alex Sandridge (1-5) allowed two runs, on five hits, and struck out seven batters in 5.1 innings.
- Newcomer also struck out hitters.

KEY PLAYS:
- In the third inning the Lady Statesmen had runners on first and second, with no outs, but failed to produce a run.
- After leaving runners stranded on second and third in the third and fifth innings AUM scored its first runs of the game, in the sixth inning, on a squeeze bunt and a double.
- The Warhawks added an insurance run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly.
 
NOTEWORTHY:
- The Lady Statesmen finished the series with just 10 hits.
- Dating back to last season, DSU has now dropped four out of its last five conference series.
- The Lady Statesmen have been shut out four times this season.
- Sandridge has allowed three earned runs, or less, in her last three starts.
