Walk-Off Win Helps Lift Lady Statesmen to DH Sweep of Lee

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Nicole Fullilove allowed just four hits and Kelly Byrd delivered a walk-off double to help the Delta State University softball team earn a pair of victories over Lee, on Sunday, at University Field. With the victories, the Lady Statesmen claimed their fourth straight Gulf South Conference series win.

GAME 1: DELTA STATE 7 (24-18, 15-11 GSC), LEE 2 (22-25, 10-16 GSC)
 
GAME CHANGER:
- Nicole Fullilove did not allow a hit for four straight innings, and allowed just four during the entire game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Statesmen outhit Lee 10-4
- Abi Gibson and Mari Alex Sandridge recorded two hits apiece for DSU. Gibson and Jordan Jones had two RBIs apiece.
- Gibson and Mallory Myers scored a pair of runs.
- DSU finished the game with seven walks.
- Fullilove (9-3) went the distance, allowing two runs, one earned, with eight strikeouts and eight walks.

KEY PLAYS:
- The Lady Statesmen took a 1-0 lead in the first on a first and third steal by Kelly Byrd and Gibson.
- Lee scored its lone runs of the game in the second, taking advantage of a DSU error.
- DSU answered in the in the bottom half of the inning, as Jones delivered a sacrifice fly to center field.
- The Lady Statesmen scored what proved to be the winning run in the fourth, cashing in on an error.
- Fullilove got four insurance runs in the fifth on a two-RBI single by Gibson, a double steal and an RBI single by Jones.
- Lee left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh.


NOTEWORTHY:
- The eight strikeouts for Fullilove tied her season-high (Auburn Montgomery, 3.3).
- DSU is 12-4 when scoring in the first inning.
- Fullilove has won five of her last six starts.
- The Lady Statesmen are 14-1 when scoring at least seven runs.

Game 2: DELTA STATE 4 (25-18, 16-11 GSC) LEE 3 (22-26, 10-11 GSC)
 
GAME CHANGER:
- Jones and Byrd had back-to-back hits to give the Lady Statesmen the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- DSU finished with a 9-8 advantage in hits.
- Jones led the Lady Statesmen at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4. Byrd (2-for-4) and Kailyn Lofton (2-for-3) also had multiple hits for DSU. All three players also had one double.
- DSU finished the game with five stolen bases.
- Taylor Johnson (10-8) allowed three runs on eighth hits, with one strikeout. She did not walk a batter.


KEY PLAYS:
- The Lady Flames took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Taylor Moran's triple to right field.
- DSU scored a pair of runs in the second, to take a 2-1 lead, as it took advantage of a pair of Lee miscues.
- The Lady Statesmen got a leadoff double from Lofton, in the fifth, but failed to capitalize on the opportunity.
- Claudia Jones hit her first home run of the year, with two outs, to give the visitors a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth.
- The Lady Statesmen left a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the inning.
- With one out in the seventh, Lofton doubled to get the rally started.
- Gibson's walk with two outs was followed by the game-tying single by Jones and Byrd's walk-off double to left center.

NOTEWORTHY:
- The Lady Statesmen are now 9-4 in one run games.
- Byrd has reached base safely in 22 straight games.
- Jones is one of three DSU players to have four hits in a game. She has hit safely in nine straight contests and has at least one RBI in six of the last nine.
- The last time DSU won four straight GSC series was in 2016, when it claimed six straight.

UP NEXT:
- The Lady Statesmen hit the road for their final GSC series of the season when they face North Alabama for a three-game set beginning on Saturday, April 21. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
