RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Clay Casey went 4-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs to lead No. 5 Delta State University (32-7) to a 13-6 win over Arkansas Tech University (26-15) on Wednesday at Tech Field.
The Statesmen clubbed three home runs that included

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Statesmen grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Jason Popovich drew a walk and Zack Shannon was hit by a pitch with one out to set up a Clay Casey three-run home run.
- Britt Stroth and Seth Wheeler scored on a Dylan McDearmon two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the first that cut the DSU lead to 3-2.
- Shannon slugged a two-run home run to centerfield after Emil Ellis walked to stretch the lead to 5-2.
- Delta State added a pair of runs in the sixth to build a 7-2 advantage. Nick Morgan doubled and scored on a Popovich triple and Popovich scored when Matt Majeur was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
- Arkansas Tech pulled within one run with a four-run sixth frame. Wheeler, Riley Hickerson and Mark Vaughn had RBI singles and another run scored on a Kyle Gibbs sac-fly to cut DSU advantage to 7-6.
- Four runs came home in the top of the eighth for DSU to push the lead to 11-6. After two quick outs, Shannon walked and Casey singled before a wild pitch moved the two to second and third. Shannon scored on a Mejeur RBI single and Josh Russell had a two-run single that scored Casey and Majeur. Morgan then singled home Lane, who was hit by a pitch, to close the scoring in the inning.
- Popovich singled to lead off the ninth and Casey cleared him off with his second home run of the afternoon to right center to give DSU a 13-6 lead.
ON THE MOUND
- Melvin Frazier (4-0) struck out four and allowed three runs on two hits with four walks to get the win for the Statesmen.
- Jason Hastings (0-1) gave up seven runs on nine hits with four walks and two strikeouts to suffer the loss for the Wonder Boys.
- Jonathan Lindsey allowed one hit with two strikeouts in 2.2 scoreless innings of work for DSU.
NOTABLES
- The Statesmen have scored at least one run in the first inning in eight straight games and are 7-1 during the stretch.
- Casey went 4-for-4 with two home runs, three runs scored and five RBIs and Majeur finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Statesmen.
- Popovich and Morgan had two hits and an RBI apiece.
- Casey has tallied 13 long balls this season and has 30 career homers, moving the Melbourne, Fla., native past John Edwards (1980-83) and Jason Cochran (1998-99) into sixth all-time in career homers.
- Shannon notched his 25th home run this season and 44th of his career. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native is one home run shy of tying Dee Haynes' single-season mark of 26 set in 1999.
- Shannon's two RBIs move him into a tie for seventh on the DSU single-season RBIs list with 76, tying Craig Newton (2005) and Jud Thigpen (2003).
- Casey went 7-for-9 with three home runs ands and 10 RBIs while Majeur was 6-for-8 with five RBIs in the two games versus Arkansas Tech.
