Emil Ellis had three RBIs apiece to lead No. 5/8 Delta State University (25-6, 14-3 GSC) to a 12-6 win over Union University (11-23, 6-12 GSC) on Saturday at Fesmire Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Statesmen took advantage of four walks in first to take a 1-0 lead. Jason Popovich, Emil Ellis and Brian Lane walked to load the bases and set up a Zack Shannon sac-fly that plated Popovich. Nick Morgan walked later in the inning before a ground out ended the early threat.
- Union took a 2-1 lead scoring a run in the second and third innings. Caleb DeMarigny walked and after stealing second and moving to third on an error, scored on a Charlie Ellis groundout in the second. Zane Phillips was hit by a pitch and scored on a David Robins double to left in the third.
- Delta State loaded the bases for the second time in the third inning. Clay Casey notched DSU's first hit of the game. Josh Russell walked and Justin Nussbaum was hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases. Casey came home when Popovich walked and an Ellis infield single scored Russell and Nussbaum.
- The Green-and-White scored seven runs on eight hits in the sixth to extend the lead to 11-2. Popovich drove in two runs on a double and Russell had a two-RBI single. Ellis, Lane, and Juwan Burney delivered run-scoring singles. Morgan and Casey also singled and scored in the inning.
- Ellis walked and scored on a Shannon RBI single to left to make the scored 12-2 in the top of the seventh.
- David Robins hit a two-run home run and a run came home on an error during a three-run seventh to cut the Union deficit to 12-5.
- The Bulldogs pushed a run across in the ninth on a Nolen Milton RBI single to left to close the scoring
ON THE MOUND
- Seth Birdsong (7-0) worked seven innings, yielding five runs, one earned, on nine hits with three six strikeouts and three walks.
- JR Miller (4-3) gave up 11 runs, 10 earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts, six walks and two hit batters as the pitcher of record for the Bulldogs.
- Jonathan Lindsey worked the final two innings, allowing a run on two hits with a strikeout to close the game.
NOTABLES
- Birdsong has thrown six-plus innings and registered at least six strikeouts in his last six starts on the mound.
- Shannon recorded his team-high 17th multi-RBI and his seventh two-RBI game.
- Casey went 2-for-4 to extend his reached base streak to 15 games.
- Popovich had three RBIs for his sixth multi-RBI game.
- Ellis went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Russell was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
