Late Rally Lifts Lady Statesmen Past Union

JACKSON, Tenn. -- The Delta State University Softball team scored seven runs in the eighth inning to pull away for a 12-5 victory over Union, in Gulf South Conference action, on Monday at Fesmire Field. With the victory, DSU earned a victory in the series.

GAME CHANGER:
- The Lady Statesmen scored seven runs, while batting around, in the top of the eighth inning.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Statesmen were outhit 12-11.
- Marissa Landrum led the Lady Statesmen, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Carlie Vice and Mari Alex
  Sandridge both had home runs.
  Sandridge and Olivia Dick had two hits apiece.
- Kelly Byrd, Vice, Landrum, Sandridge and Chelsea Lamping all drove in two runs apiece.
- The Lady Statesmen had four extra base hits.
- Nicole Fullilove (8-3) allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits in five innings of relief.

KEY PLAYS:
- The Lady Statesmen took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Byrd and a sacrifice
  bunt by Vice.
- Union responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run on an RBI single by Sarah Smith.
- Vice gave the Lady Statesmen a 3-1 lead with her solo home run in the third.
- The Lady Statesmen took the lead for good in the second inning with an RBI double by Jones and a single 
   by Vice.
- Union scored three in the fourth, to take a 4-3 lead, using an RBI double by Samantha McDaniel and a
   two-RBI single by Gabby Morris
- In the fifth, Landrum gave the Lady Statesmen a 5-4 advantage with a two-RBI single.
- The hosts answered in the bottom half of the inning with a two out RBI single by Ashten Petty.
- Fullilove forced Union to leave runners stranded on third in the sixth and seventh innings.
- DSU exploded for seven runs, to complete the scoring, in the eighth inning highlighted by the home run by
  Sandridge and a single by Lamping that scored a pair of runs.
 
NOTEWORTHY:
- The Lady Statesmen are now 5-2 in extra inning games and 13-1 when leading after the fifth inning.
- DSU is now 5-1 when hitting two, or more, home runs.
- Byrd leads the Lady Statesmen with nine multiple-RBI games.
- DSU is now 4-9 when being outhit by its opponent.
- The Lady Statesmen are 9-1 in their last 10 games against Union.
