LAKELAND, Fla. Zack Shannon,
Clay Casey and
Brian Lane to lift No. 3 seed Delta State University (42-10) to an 8-3 win over No. 6 seed Montevallo (38-16) in an elimination game of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament on Tuesday at Tigertown.
Shannon hit a grand slam for his 30
th home run of the season and Casey followed with a solo home run to highlight a five-run eighth to break a 3-3 tie and give the Statesmen an 8-3 lead.
Lane hit a grand slam in the ninth to give the Statesmen a 12-3 lead and cap the scoring.
DSU starter
Seth Hougesen yielded one run on three hits while tying a a career-high with seven strikeouts over six innings for the Statesmen.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game was scoreless until the sixth when the Statesmen struck for two runs. Juwan Burney led off with a double and Nick Morgan was hit by a pitch. Following a strikeout and a fly out, Jason Popovich singled through the right side to score Burney and Morgan and put the Statesmen a 2-0 advantage.
- Delta State added a run in the seventh to build the lead to 3-0. Clay Casey belted his second double of the game and then moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring when Burney executed a squeeze bunt sacrifice.
- Montevallo rallied for three runs to tie the game 3-3 in the seventh. Jared Nixon doubled and scored on a Tyler Krabbe groundout and Khari Anderson double home Sebastian Samuels for the first two runs. Mark Castellucci's RBI single scored Anderson to tie the game.
- Two-out lightning struck for the Statesmen in a five-run eighth that broke the 3-3 tie. After two quick outs, Popovich reached on a fielder's choice, Emil Ellis walked and Brian Lane was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Zack Shannon unloaded on a pitch to right field for a grand slam and Casey followed with solo round tripper to right to give the Statesmen an 8-3 lead.
ON THE MOUND
- Statesmen starter Seth Hougesen struck out a career-high seven batters against one walk while allowing one run on three hits over six innings of work.
- UM starter Cas Sibler worked six innings allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
- Hunter Riggins (3-1) picked up the win for the Statesmen, allowing two runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk in relief of Hougesen.
- Kale Latorre (3-2) gave up six runs on four hits to take the loss in relief of Sibler.
NOTABLES
- The seven strikeouts by Hougesen tied his career-high set against Mississippi Valley State (3.21).
- With Shannon's eighth inning grand slam, the senior became the first player in the state of Mississippi to belt 30 home runs in a season. Mississippi State's Rafael Palmeiro (1984) and Bruce Castoria (1981) previously held the state mark of 29.
- Shannon and Casey hit back to back home runs for the fourth time this season.
- Shannon has driven in 91 runs this season with his four RBIs against the Falcons and needs two RBIs tie Dee Haynes' (1999) single season mark of 92.
- Delta State and Montevallo played for the first time since 2013 when the Falcons moved from the Gulf South Conference to the Peach Belt Conference. The Statesmen had won the last 12 games prior to the series being discontinued.
- The Statesmen two grand slams give the team nine grand slams on the season.
- Seven of the Statesmen's first eight runs came with two outs.
- Casey finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and a home run.
- Popovich had two hits and two RBIs followed Ellis with two hits and two runs scored.
- Lane was 2-for-5 with a grand slam and two runs scored.
