STATESMEN OUTGAIN CRUSADERS IN HOME LOSS

CLEVELAND, Miss.– The Delta State University football team held the final margin in total offense, but fell to North Greenville on Saturday at home by a final score of 33-20. 

Despite the loss, the Statesmen (0-4, 0-2 GSC) tallied season highs in points scored (20) and total yards (403). The Crusaders (2-1, 1-0 GSC) finished with 383 yards of total offense.

DSU quarterback Patrick Shegog had 325 yards of total offense to lead the Statesmen offense. In passing, he finished the game 23-for-44 for a career-high 295 yards.
 
The loss is DSU's first in the three-game series history against the Crusaders (2-1, 1-0 GSC). It also gives DSU its first 0-4 start since 2002.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Statesmen opened the scoring on the opening drive of the game with a 28-yard field goal by Taylor Crabtree. That drive was aided by a 52-yard kickoff return by William Lawson.
  • DSU executed a successful fake punt at their own 45-yard line with Kelon Wilson taking it 55-yards for a touchdown midway through the first quarter. It was the longest play from scrimmage of the season for DSU. It was also the longest run of Wilson's career.
  • The Crusaders got on the board on the 5:02 mark of the opening quarter with a 61-yard touchdown pass from Will Hunter to Demajiay Rooks.
  • NGU gained a 14-10 lead at the 3:47 mark of the first quarter on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Hunter to Lucas Catalfomo.
  • Matt Gravely gave the Crusaders a 17-10 lead on a 39-yard field goal at the 4:28 mark of the second quarter to close the first-half scoring.
  • The Crusaders took a two-score early in the third quarter on a 24-yard interception return for a touchdown by Azende' Dixon.
  • The Statesmen got back on the board with a 42-yard field goal by Taylor Crabtree with 9:24 remaining in the third quarter to cap a nine-play drive.
  • NGU went up 30-13 with 6:14 remaining in the third quarter on a 17-yard pass into the end zone from Hunter to Matthew Martin.
  • The Crusaders went up 33-13 with 10:26 remaining in the game on a 36-yard field goal by Gravely.
  • The Statesmen trimmed their deficit to 13 points with a 10-yard touchdown run by quarterback Patrick Shegog at the 8:07 mark of the fourth quarter for the final score of the game.
 
OFFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
  • The Statesmen scored a season-high 20 points and had a season-high 403 yards of total offense in the loss to NGU.
  • Kelon Wilson's 55-yard run to the end zone on DSU's fake punt in the first quarter was his second rushing touchdown of the season.
  • Shegog's 10-yard quarterback keeper for a touchdown in the fourth quarter was his second rushing touchdown of the season.
  • Patrick Shegog and Tyler Harrell hooked up for the Statesmen's longest passing play of the season with a 43-yard toss late in the fourth quarter.
  • Shegog finished the game 23-for-44 for 295 yards with two interceptions. His favorite target in the game was Jakaylen Jackson, who had eight receptions for 37 yards. Tyler Harrell added six catches for 137 yards. Ty Harris finished with four receptions for 82 yards.
 
DEFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
  • DSU's Darren Gardenhire forced his second fumble of the season early in the first quarter.
  • DSU's Chris Pickett hauled in the first interception of his career midway through the second quarter to negate a seven-play, 80-yard drive for the Crusaders.
  • Ovenson Cledanford paced the Statesmen defense and totaled a game-high 12 tackles in the loss. David Herrington and Dante added eight tackles each.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTEABLES:
  • Delta State's William Lawson opened the game with a 52-yard kickoff return, which is the longest return of the season by the Statesmen.
  • Statesmen Taylor Crabtree was 2-for-2 on field goals in the loss, including his second field goal of at least 40 yards of the season with a made 42-yarder in the third quarter. Crabtree is now 5-for-8 on field goals this season.
 
OTHER NOTEABLES:
  • Delta State drops to 0-4 for first time since 2002.

  • The Statesmen are back at home next Saturday, September 29 to take on the University of West Florida. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Parker Field-McCool Stadium.
