Lee edges Lady Statesmen 1-0 on PK in Double Overtime

CLEVELAND, Miss. – It was a heartbreaking ending to a historic night under the lights at Parker Field-McCool Stadium for the Delta State University women's soccer team, as the Lady Statesmen fell, 1-0, to the Lady Flames of Lee University on Kelsey Yoder's game-winning penalty kick in the 109th minute of double overtime. Friday's game was the first ever night game at home for the Lady Statesmen.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Flames fired off 10 first half shots, including four on goal. Riley Engels placed two of her five shots on goal. Mia Hollingsworth and Devin Healey also placed shots on goal, but neither shot did not find the back of the net.
  • Lady Statesmen keeper Amanda Hilliard recorded four first half saves.
  • In the 56th minute, Lee had another point-blank opportunity, as Hilliard repelled Healey's shot from 10 yards out.
  • Engels marched the ball down the left side, placing a shot just wide of an open net in the 73rd minute after DSU's keeper lost her footing.
  • The Lady Statesmen earned a corner in the 79th minute, but Anoucke Bass's cross into the box was well defended by the Flames.
  • After both teams were presented chances in the final two minutes, the second period ended in a 0-0 tie. The regulation numbers had Lee with 21 total shots, 10 on goal, while Delta State had three shots.
  • In the 95th minute, Diana Okechukwu's shot from 10 yards out was saved by Lee's Taylor Green.
  • Lee's attack in the 105th minute came up short, as Healy's header was saved once again by Hilliard.
  • Three minutes later, Lee was awarded a penalty kick and Kelsey Yoder found the back of the net on her strike to end the match 108th minute. It was her third goal of the year.     

STAT OF THE GAME:
  • Hilliard, a freshman from Baton Rouge, La., faced 27 shots in 107:42 in goal, recording a career-high 12 saves. Her previous high was nine saves at Alabama-Huntsville on Sept. 14.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • It was a historic night for the Lady Statesmen, as Delta State played its first home game under the lights at Parker Field-McCool Stadium. The match was moved to the turf due to a water-logged Delta Field.
  • DSU is now 1-1 in overtime decisions this season. The Lady Statesmen defeated Alabama-Huntsville, 1-0, on Sept. 14 in Huntsville, Ala., in their previous overtime result.  
  • Lee defeated the Lady Statesmen, 6-1, in last year's match in Cleveland, Tenn., on Sept. 15, 2017.    

UP NEXT:
  • The Lady Statesmen are set to host the Shorter University Hawks (1-8, 0-4) on Sunday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is set for noon at Delta Field. Pizza, kid-friendly games and much more will be available as part of Sunday Fun Day. Kids 12 and under will be able to join the Lady Statesmen on the field during pregame festivities and anyone who presents a ticket from Saturday's football game with West Florida will receive free admission.
