Breaux's Double Overtime Goal Lifts Statesmen to First Victory

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University men's soccer team earned their first win of the season defeating Shorter University 3-2 in double overtime on Sunday. Junior Zachary Breaux scored the game winning goal in the 102nd minute.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • DSU got on the board first off of a header by Bruno Osorio in the 15th minute.
  • Twenty minutes later the Statesmen struck again. This time with a goal by John Nicklas.
  • After a foul by Owen Howard in the 59th minute, Val Evans scored on a penalty kick for Shorter.
  • Then in the 76th minute, Thallison Alex scored the equalizer for the Hawks.
  • The game winning goal came from Zachary Breaux in the second overtime. His diving header came from a cross by Osorio in the 102nd minute.
BEYOND THE NUMBERS:
  • Statesmen had a season high 20 shots with 14 of those on target.
  • Matthew Klink recorded eight saves in the first win of the year for DSU.
  • John Nicklas scored the first goal of his DSU career.
  • Zachary Breaux earned his first game winning goal and the third goal of his career.
  • There were six yellow cards given in the contest with the Statesmen picking up four.
  • This was the highest scoring game of the season for the Statesmen.
  • Two of the last three matches have gone into double overtime with DSU now 1-1 in extra time this year.
  • It was the first GSC win for DSU since October 20, 2017 when the Green and White beat Auburn Montgomery 4-1.

UP NEXT:
The Statesmen will go on the road for a pair of Gulf South Conference matches. First the Statesmen take on Union University in Jackson, Tenn. on October 5th, Then on Sunday Oct. 7th, then the Green and White play Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn.
