CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University women's basketball team outscored the University of West Florida 37-25 in the second half to claim a 63-52 victory on Thursday, Jan. 10 at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
Quantesha Patterson led the Lady Statesmen (10-4, 5-2 GSC) with 16 points, with 14 coming in the second half.
Nia Johnson (13) and
Ernesha Chatman (12) joined Patterson in double figures.
Toni Brewer led West Florida with 16 points while Halee Nieman and Anna Hall added 10 points apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Points were hard to come by at the outset of the contest, as Delta State built an early 4-2 lead.
- West Flordia answered with an 8-0 run to take a 10-4 lead at the 4:54 media timeout of the first quarter. Toni Brewer's six points fueled the Argonaut run.
- Zyaire Ewing's introduction to the lineup paid large dividends for the Lady Statesmen, as Delta State closed the quarter on an 8-3 run. The junior's eight points allowed cut the Argonauts lead to three, 17-14.
- UWF kept the pressure on the Lady Statesmen to start the second quarter, as the Argonauts built at six-point lead, 22-16, at the media timeout. Belle Bistrow's 3-pointer and Hall's fast break lay-up was the difference in the first 5:34 of the frame.
- Bistrow's second 3-pointer of the half extended UWF's lead to nine, 27-18, with 3:11 remaining in the second quarter.
- Six straight points from Ernesha Chatman and Quantesha Patterson's steal and lay-in allowed the Lady Statesmen to end the half on an 8-0 run and end the half trailing by one, 27-26.
- DSU shot 41.9 percent (13-of-31) while UWF managed 45.5 percent (10-of-22). Hall led UWF and Ewing paced DSU with eight points apiece.
- Chatman's jumper to open the second half gave the Lady Statesmen their first lead, 28-27, since 4-2 in the first quarter.
- Alondrea Rush finally got on the board for the Lady Statesmen with a spinning lay-up off the glass. The basket gave DSU a brief three-point lead, 32-29, with 7:36 to go in the third.
- West Florida answered back with two from Halee Nieman, one from Brewer and two from Hall to reclaim the lead 34-32.
- Nia Johnson canned a pair of 3-pointers and Patterson drained a short jumper to put Delta State back up 40-38 with 3:31 to play in the third quarter.
- Danielle Norquest's 3-pointer with 2:58 to go in the third gave the Argonauts a 41-40 lead.
- DSU ended the third quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 45-41 advantage. Aliyah Herod's 18-foot jumper and Johnson's third 3-pointer of the quarter was the difference.
- The Lady Statesmen opened the final quarter with five points from Patterson to extend their lead to nine, 50-41, with 9:00 remaining.
- After a Nieman lay-up ended the run for the Lady Statesmen, Patterson came right back with another personal 5-0 stretch to extend the lead to 12, 55-43, with 7:49 to go.
- Brewer's back-to-back jumpers made it an eight-point game, 55-47, with 4:59 left in the contest.
- Three free throws from Alondrea Rush and a traditional 3-point play from Kirstin Brown gave the Lady Statesmen a 13-point lead with just over a minute to play.
- UWF's Nieman ended the scoring with a lay-up to make the final margin 11 points, 63-52, for the Lady Statesmen.
- DSU finished the game shooting 45 percent (27-of-60) from the floor while holding UWF to 41.3 percent (19-of-46). The Argonauts out-rebounded DSU 32-29, but the Lady Statesmen scored 16 points off UWF's 22 turnovers.
TURNING POINT
- A 10-2 run by the Lady Statesmen, with all 10 points coming from Patterson, allowed Delta State to build a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter.
STAT OF THE GAME
- Patterson scored 14 second half points to power the Lady Statesmen to the 63-52 win over West Florida. The junior transfer from East Mississippi Community College finished the night with 16 points.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Thursday's win snapped a seven game winning streak for West Florida over Delta State.
- Alondrea Rush, a senior from Horn Lake, moved past Shawna Wright (1997-2000) into 33rd place on the career scoring chart with 1,080 points.
- West Florida's 52 points was its lowest total of the season and 22 points below its season average.
- Johnson scored 13 points on the night, including three second half 3-pointers.
