CBU Claims 90-88 Win After Furious Second Half @DeltaStateMBB Comeback Falls Short

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Despite Rasheide Bell's career-high 28 points and a furious 27-9 run in the final 3:45 of the contest, the Delta State University men's basketball team saw its five-game win streak come to an end, as Christian Brothers University claimed a 90-88 victory on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Canale Arena. The Statesmen (12-5, 8-2 GSC) remain in first place in the Gulf South Conference standings despite the loss.
 
CBU's Joe Laravie led all scorers with 37 points after making 7-of-11 from 3-point range.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Christian Brothers led 11-9 at the 15:42 media timeout after making 3-of-5 from 3-point range to start the game. CBU's Joe Laravie led all scorers with eight points.
  • The Bucs extended their lead to seven, 16-9, on Nick Deifel's 3-pointer with 14:38 to go in the first half.
  • Delta State made it a five-point game, 16-11, as Cedric Harper scored on a lob from Rasheide Bell.
  • CBU kept the pressure on the Statesmen, extending its lead to 12, 24-12, at the 11:39 break. The Bucs were in the middle of a 15-3 run in 4:39, while making 6-of-7 shots from the floor.
  • With the Statesmen struggling to find a stride offensively, the Bucs built a 21-point advantage, 35-14, with 8:30 to play in the first. Jacob Lyons had the last four points for CBU, including two chances at 3-point plays.
  • Cameron Burkett ended DSU's 4:13 field goal drought with a 3-pointer at the top of the key.
  • Adam Dieball came right back for CBU with a deep 3-pointer and a hook in the lane to keep the Bucs lead at 21, 42-21, with 3:58 to play.
  • Bell's knifing layup in the lane was DSU's ninth field goal in 24 attempts. The basket sliced the CBU lead to 45-23 with 3:38 to go.
  • Luke Rudy's 3-pointer with 3:13 to play gave CBU its largest lead of the day at 48-23.
  • The Statesmen finally found their stride at the end of the half, ending the period on an 8-0 run to head into halftime down 48-31.
  • CBU shot a blistering 69.2 percent (18-of-26) from the field, including 8-of-13 from 3-point range for 61.5 percent. The Bucs were held scoreless for the final 3:13 of the first half.
  • DSU was held to 42.9 percent from the floor after making 12-of-28 in the first half. The Statesmen were just 1-of-7 from 3-point range.
  • Dieball led CBU and all scorers with 14 points while Laravie added 13 at the break.
  • Bell's eight points led the Statesmen with Harper and Benford chipping in six points apiece.
  • Laravie scored CBU's first five points of the second half, as the Bucs extended their lead back to 20, 53-33, with 18:20 to go in the game.
  • After a pair of Bell free throws, the Statesmen trailed 56-38 with 16:00 on the clock. The senior from Evansville, Ind., had seven of DSU's nine second half points at that time.
  • Justin Slocum's layup cut the DSU deficit to 14, 58-44, with 13:43 to play.
  • Warner's 3-pointer, just DSU's second of the game, cut the Bucs' lead to 13, 60-47, with 13:00 remaining.
  • Over the next 4:25, the Bucs outscored the Statesmen 5-4 to lead 65-51 with 8:35 to play.
  • Laravie's seventh 3-pointer of the day gave CBU a commanding 84-61 lead with 3:46 to play.
  • Using a 20-6 run, with five coming from both Warner and Bell, the Statesmen cut the CBU lead to six with 39.1 to play.
  • After another CBU turnover, Warner drilled a 3-pointer at the top of the key to make it a three-point game, 87-84, with 33.6 seconds to play.
  • CBU ended the 10-0 run by the Statesmen with a breakaway layup by Deifel to go back up by five, 89-84, with 31.0 seconds on the clock.
  • Benford's two free throws put the deficit back at three, 89-86, with 22.9 to play.
  • CBU coughed it up on the in-bounds pass and Warner connected on a turnaround jumper with 9.1 seconds to play to make it a one-point game, 89-88.
  • Laravie made 1-of-2 from the line to extend the lead to two with 6.4 left.
  • Warner's 3-point attempt found the iron unkind, as CBU claimed the 90-88 victiory.
  • Delta State outscored CBU 27-9 over the final 3:46 of the game.
  • CBU finished the night shooting 62 percent (31-of-50), including an amazing 16-of-26 from 3-point range.
  • DSU shot 57.1 percent in the second half to finish the game at 50.8 percent (32-of-63) from the floor. The Statesmen out-rebounded the Bucs 33-27 and dominated points in the paint 46-28.             

TURNING POINT
  • Despite Delta State outscoring Christian Brothers 27-9 in the final 3:46, the Bucs used a breakaway layup by Deifels and a free throw from Laravie to close out the win.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
  • The Bucs connected on 16-of-26 from 3-point range on the night. Laravie made seven from 3-point range to lead CBU.  
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Bell turned in a career-high 28 points after shooting 11-of-14 from the floor. The senior from Evansville, Ind., also grabbed nine rebounds.
  • Warner, who scored 17 points, moved past Gerald Glass (1986-1987 | 1,249 points) into 11th place on the career scoring chart with 1,259 points.
  • Slocum collected his fourth double-double of the year, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
  • Harper (11) and Benford (13) also scored in double figures.
  • Laravie led all scorers and CBU with 37 points. Dieball added 16 points with Deifels chipping in 14 and Rudy 11.
