Lady Statesmen Drop GSC Opener At Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Delta State Women's basketball team (4-1, 0-1) could not dig out of an 11-point fourth quarter hole as the University of Montevallo (4-1, 1-0 GSC) claimed a 79-70 win on Saturday at Trustmark Arena.
 
Delta State closed to the 11-point gap to 71-68 on a Quantesha Patterson basket with 3:03 left in the game before the Falcons closed the game on an 8-2 run to hold on for the win.
 
Ernesha Chatman and Nia Johnson scored 20 points while Patterson scored 18 points and collected 17 rebounds to lead the Lady Statesmen.  Patterson notched her fourth straight and 10th of her career.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons built a 13-8 lead with 4:07 left in the first quarter before Kirstin Brown cut the lead to 13-12 on a field goal with 3:41 to go.
  • Jordan Jones' basket stretched the lead to 20-12 with 1:51 remaining.
  • Nia Johnson's layup at the 1:06 mark cut the lead to 20-16 going into the second quarter.
  • Montevallo maintained a six-point lead in the second quarter until a Chatman jumper in the paint tied the game 28-28 with 5:47 to go in the first quarter.
  • Savannah Lee made a jump shot in the paint to give UM a 37-34 lead at halftime.
  • UM held an eight-point lead in the third quarter before DSU cut the deficit to 53-50 on a Johnson fastbreak layup with 3:30 left.
  • After a Lee basket gave the Falcons a 60-54 lead, Patterson cut the UM lead to 60-56 with 20 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
  • Montevallo opened the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run to build a 69-58 lead on a Jones layup with 5:53 to go.
  • The Lady Statesmen cut the deficit 71-68 on a Patterson basket at the 3:03 mark of the fourth quarter.
  • Montevallo outscored the Lady Statesmen 8-2 over the final 3:03 pull away for the win.
