Late Surge Lifts Lady Statesmen Past Cotton Blossoms

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Zyaire Ewing's second double-double of the season led the No. 25 Delta State University women's basketball team (8-1) to a 79-59 victory over the University of Arkansas-Monticello (8-2).

Zyaire Ewing led all scorers with 21 points while Quantesha Patterson led both teams in rebounds with 15.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • At the 4:54 media timeout Delta State lead the Cotton Blossoms 8-3.Ewing and Ernesha Chatman lead the Lady Statesmen with 4 apiece.
  • DSU held a 15-4 lead with 2:12 left in the first period. Delta State was led by Zyarie Ewing's 7 points.
  • At the end of the first quarter the Lady Statesmen led the Cotton Blossoms 19-10. AUM was only 4-12 from the field and had 7 turnovers in the quarter. DSU scored 13 points off the UAM turnovers.
  • Delta State led UAM by 10, 25-15 with 6:00 left in the 2nd quarter.
  • The Lady Statesmen still maintained a 10-point led as of the media timeout at 4:53 Ewing still led DSU with 7 points.
  • Delta State held a 35-27 lead at the half. The Lady Statesmen were led by Ewing's 13 points. Ewing also had 2 steals in the first half. Jaida Muhammad led the Cotton Blossoms with her own 13 points. UAM led the half in rebounding 19-16.
  • Thanks to two three pointers in a row from Nia Johnson, DSU extended their lead to 10, 43-33 with 6:15 left in the third quarter.
  • At the 4:49 media timeout the Lady Statesmen led the Cotton Blossoms 48-37. Ewing led DSU with 15 points.
  • With 4:06 left in the 3rd quarter Delta State extended their lead to 13, their largest of the game, DSU led 50-37.
  • Delta State led Arkansas-Monticello by 11 at the end of the 3rd quarter.  Patterson and Ewing led DSU in the quarter with 6 points apiece. UAM shot their best FG% of the game going 6-13 in the quarter.
  • A lay up by UAM's Mackenzie Hicks cut Delta States' lead to 9, 59-50.
  • Delta State went on a 16-0 run starting at 8:02 mark of the fourth quarter to stretched the lead to 75-50.
 
TURNING POINT
  • A low shooting percentage throughout the game by UAM allowed the Statesmen to hold the lead for most of the game.
  • Although both teams had 15 turnovers apiece the Lady Statesmen scored 26 points off of UAM's turnovers while the Cotton Blossoms only scored 11 off of DSU's turnovers.
  • A 16-0 run late in the fourth allowed the Lady Statesmen to pull away from the Lady Blossoms.
