Lady Statesmen Split Final Day UAH Charger Chillout

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Delta State University Softball played played their final double header at the UAH Charger Chillout on Sunday February 10th, 2019. The Lady Statesmen took on the University of Missouri- St. Louis at 9 am. DSU would then play Bellarmine University at 12:30.
The Lady Statesmen were led by a great pitching performance by Nicole Fullilove in game one to defeat University of Missouri- St. Louis 2-1.
DSU would fall to Bellarmine 11-3 in game two despite a late inning comeback.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs Missouri- St. Louis (GM1)
  • Strong pitching performances by DSU's Nicole Fullilove and UMSL's Carly Kingery resulted in a scoreless first three innings. The first team to plate a run was Missouri- St. Louis after Chelsea Martinez's RBI double to right center, in the top of the fourth.
  • Delta State would tie it up 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth after Jordan Jones drove in Abi Gibson with a double to center field.
  • The contest was forced to go into extra innings after both teams were held scoreless after the fourth.
  • Gibson would hit the walk off for the Lady Statesmen. Her Single to left field was enough to plate Katelynn Carcich resulting in DSU's 2-1 victory over Missouri- St. Louis.
 
ON THE MOUND vs. Missouri- St. Louis GM1)
  • DSU's Nicole Fullilove (4-2) received the win after one run in five hits and five strikeouts through five innings.
  • UMSL's Carly Kingrey (0-1) received the loss. She gave up two runs off five hits in seven and a third innings of work.
 
 
NOTEABLES (GM1)
  • Gibson (3-4) was the only Lady Statesmen to have a multi-hit game.
 
 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. Bellarmine (GM2)
  • DSU was first to score after Mari Alex Sandridge's triple to right center drove in Kailyn Lofton in the top of the second.
  • Bellarmine would tie it up in the bottom of the second after Ciara Incorvati scored on an error.
  • Bellarmine took the lead in the bottom of the third after Samantha Smith's RBI single gave them a 2-1 lead. They would extend their lead later in the inning when Rachel Ayer drove in a runner off a sacrifice bunt.
  • BU's lead continued to grow in the bottom of the fourth after one un was plated by an HBP, the next three runs in the inning would be walked in giving Bellarmine a 7-1 lead.
  • The Lady Statesmen would make a small comeback in the fifth inning after Jones' two run single to right center.
  • Bellarmine scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. The first was driven in after an error, and the second run was driven in by Ayer's RBI single.
  • Bellarmine would win by mercy rule 11-3 after Hannah Webb's RBI double to center field. 
 
ON THE MOUND vs. Bellarmine (GM2)
  • Bellarmine's Olivia Knies (1-0) received the win after giving up three runs off five hits in five innings.
  • Mari Alex Sandridge (4-2) received the loss off for DSU. She gave up seven runs off five its through three and two thirds innings.
  •  Brittany Taylor came in to relive Sandridge. Taylor gave up four runs off six hits after two innings of work.
 
NOTEABLES (GM2)
  • The only Lady Statesmen to have a multi-hit game was Jones (2-3). She also was the only DSU player to have two RBIs.
 
Up Next:
Delta State Softball will be back in action Saturday February 16th, 2019 for a double header at the University of Montevallo. Game one will be played at 1 pm and game two will be played at 3 pm. The series against Montevallo will be the beginning of GSC play.
