MONTEVALLO, Al. – Delta State Softball opened Gulf South Conference play Friday February 15, 2019, splitting a double header at the University of Montevallo.
The Lady Statesmen dropped game one in a close 1-0 loss.
Nicole Fullilove had an impressive performance off the mound for Delta State, giving up one run off only three hits while striking out seven.
Delta State won 6-5 in a tightly contested game two. The Lady Statesmen were led by impressive hitting performances by
Jordan Jones,
Carlie Vice, and
Ta'mya Johnson.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM1)
- After three and a half scoreless innings Montevallo scored the only run of the game after they loaded the bases in the bottom of the third. One run would score with the bases loaded after an HBP brought the runner from third home.
- The Lady Statesmen loaded the bases in the sixth and in the seventh but were unable to score.
ON THE MOUND (GM1)
- Nicole Fullilove (3-3) got the loss for the Delta State after giving up only one run off three hits through six innings of work.
- Abbey Pratt (3-0) got the win for the Lady Falcons after pitching a shutout five and a third innings.
- Kristina Manthei came in to relieve Pratt. Manthei received the save and was able to keep the shutout going for the remainder of the game.
NOTEABLES (GM1)
- Olivia Dick (2-4) was the only Lady Statesmen with a multiple hit game.
- Delta State out hit Montevallo 5-3.
- Fullilove had seven strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM2)
- DSU took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The first run was plated after Abi Gibson doubled to left field. Kelly Bird later drove in Gibson with a single to the short stop.
- Montevallo was able to take the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the first. Brianna Stella was able to score the first run after a wild pitch. Holly Laforce drove in the second run after a groundout to second. Kendra Buckley would drive in the last run of the inning with a sacrifice bunt.
- DSU took a 4-3 lead in the top of the third. Jordan Jones scored the first run with a home run over right field. Ta'mya Johnson crossed the plate after a wild pitch to score the second run to take the lead.
- Montevallo was able to take the lead back in the bottom of the fourth after Haley Barnette's two RBI double to left center. DSU trailed 5-4.
- The Lady Statesmen tied the game up in the top of the fifth after Carlie Vice's double to right center plated Johnson.
- Delta State reclaimed the lead 6-5 in the top of the fifth when Vice drove in jones on a ground out to second.
ON THE MOUND vs. (GM2)
- Mari Alex Sandridge (4-1) got the win for the Lady Statesmen after five runs off eight hits through seven innings.
- Kristina Manthei started the game for Montevallo but would not record an out after giving up two runs off four hits in the top of the first.
- Alexis Bonanno (1-2) got the loss for Montevallo after coming into relieve Manthei, she gave up 4 runs off five hits through six innings.
- Mychael McMillan relieved Bonanno in the top of the seventh. She gave up no runs and no hits in her one inning of work.
NOTEABLES (GM2)
- Jones with her first home run of the season.
- Vice had a two RBI game
- Vice (2-4), Johnson (2-4), and Jones (2-3) all had a multi-hit game.
- Delta State out hit Montevallo 9-8.
