CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Delta State University men's tennis team opened the 2019 season with a thrilling 4-0 victory over Alcorn State University on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at the Cleveland Country Club. The Statesmen (1-0) gave newly minted skipper
Bo Petro his first collegiate win as a head coach.
Delta State opened the match by winning the top two flights in doubles.
Trey Seymour and Emile Le Teriier defeated Jonathan Parat and Stjan Stjanovski, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles while
Hugo Stroppiana and
Mason Vice claimed No. 2 doubles with a 6-2 win over Ivan Matas and Santiago Rocca.
Stroppiana opened singles play with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 2 over Stojanovski. Vice followed suit at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Matas.
De Sousa closed the door on the match for the Statesmen at No. 4, defeating Nuno Rocha 6-4, 6-2.
Flights one, five and six were not completed.
The Statesmen return to action on Friday, Feb. 15, as Delta State opens Gulf South Conference play versus Shorter University. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the Cleveland Country Club.
