Lady Statesmen Clip Falcons To Secure GSC Tournament Home Game

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Quantesha Patterson scored 20 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the Delta State University women's basketball (18-9, 13-7 GSC) to a 76-58 win over the University of Montevallo (12-15, 8-12 GSC) on Thurs., Feb. 28 at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

The Lady Statesmen secured the No. 4 seed in the 2019 Gulf South Conference Women's Basketball Tournament and will host No. 5 seed Valdosta State University on Tues., March 5 at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

Patterson's double-double was her sixth of the season and led three Lady Statesmen in double figures. Nia Johnson and Frederica Haywood had 14 points followed by Zyaire Ewing with 12 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montevallo jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Lady Statesmen four points from Patterson and two from Nia Johnson to take a 6-4 lead at 6:31 mark.
  • Trailing 8-6, DSU went on a 7-0 spurt to build a 14-8 lead after a Ewing jump shot with 2:27 to go in the opening quarter.
  • Ewing added another basket at the 1:16 mark and UM's Aaliyah Rice closed the quarter with a layup as the Lady Statesmen held a 15-12 lead.
  • Kiya Sain made two free throws to cut the DSU lead to 15-14 to start the second quarter.
  • The Lady Statesmen went on a 10-0 run to take a 24-14 lead. A Johnson 3-pointer started the run while Frederica Haywood made two free throws and a layup at the 5:54 mark.
  • Johnson gave the Lady Statesmen a 27-16 lead with 5:27 left before Montevallo cut the lead to 27-22 on Shyan Flack 3-pointer with 4:34 left.
  • The Falcons would go on a 6-2 run to close the first half leading 31-30 after a Naukita Philpot jumper with 21 seconds left.
  • The Lady Statesmen opened the third quarter on an 11-3 run which included a 7-0 run to put the DSU up 41-34 on a Rush three with 6:04 remaining.
  • A Haywood layup gave the Lady Statesmen a 43-36 at the third quarter media time out.
  • A Jordan Lenoir 3-point play gave pushed the Lady Statesmen lead to 50-40 with under a minute left in the third quarter.
  • The Lady Statesmen took a 52-42 lead into the final quarter on a Haywood layup with 32 seconds left.
  • Delta State opened the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run, taking a 60-45 lead after a 3-point play by Patterson at the 7:00 mark.
  • A 6-2 run opened up a 68-50 lead with 4:39 remaining. Ewing made four free throws and Patterson added a layup during the stretch.
  • The Lady Statesmen never let Montevallo any closer the 14 points in the fourth quarter to close 76-58 win.
 
TURNING POINT
  • Trailing 31-30 at the half, the Lady Statesmen outscored the Falcons 46-27 in the second half and 22-11 in the third quarter.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Alondrea Rush scored six points to move to move her career scoring total to 1,183 (29th) and needs 12 points to move past Amber Gean (1,194) into 29th.  The Horn Lake, Miss., native made 2-of-7 3-pointers on the night to remain ranked second in 3-pointers made (211) and needs two 3-point attempts to passing Chelsey Rhodes (616) for second all-time.
  • Patterson scored 20 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds, eclipsing her old her previous career-high of 14 set against Union University (1.19.19). The Maben, Miss., leads the team with six double-doubles and 21 double-figure scoring games this season.
  • Haywood had 14 points and nine rebounds and Johnson had 14 points and five assists.
  • Ewing finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.
 
UP NEXT
The Lady Statesmen will host No. 5 seed Valdosta State University on Tuesday 6:30 p.m. at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
