CBU, AUM Visit Lady Statesmen For Key GSC Home Stand

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Delta State University women's basketball (13-8, 8-6 GSC) welcomes Christian Brothers University (9-10, 6-8 GSC) and Auburn University at Montgomery (2-19, 1-12 GSC) for a two-game home stand this Thursday and Saturday at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Christian Brothers visits for a Thursday matchup at 5:30 p.m. before Auburn Montgomery comes calling at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

GSC RACE: Delta State enters the week 5th in the GSC standings with an 8-5 record. Alabama Huntsville is 4th with an 8-5 record and Valdosta State is 3rd at 9-4 mark.  Union is 13-1 and is the only team that has clinched a berth in the GSC Tournament while Lee is 11-2 and West Florida is 11-3.  The Lady Statesmen are 1-1 versus UAH and 1-0  against UWF and Lee. DSU is 0-1 against VSU and will play the Blazers on Feb. 16.

LADY STATESMEN REWIND: The Green-and-White went 1-1 last week defeating Auburn Montgomery, 71-47, on Thursday, Jan., 31 in Montgomery, Ala., before falling to Alabama Huntsville, 82-73 on Sat., Feb. 2 in Huntsville, Ala., to end road trip. Zyaire Ewing posted a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds in the win over Auburn Montgomery at the AUM Athletic Complex. Nia Johnson (23), Quantesha Patterson (18) and Frederica Haywood (11) scored in double figures against UAH.

INSIDE THE CBU SERIES:   Delta State and Christian Brothers meet for the 50th time on the hardwood with the Lady Statesmen holding a 44-5 lead in the series. Christian Brothers claimed a 72-69 win over the Lady Statesmen in Memphis, Tenn., on Jan. 19 to end the Lady Statesmen's three-game winning streak in the series.  The Lady Statesmen are 23-0 versus CBU in the friendly confines of Walter Sillers Coliseum.

INSIDE THE AUM SERIES: This is the 6th meeting all-time between Delta State and Auburn Montgomery with the Lady Statesmen owning a 3-2 lead. Delta State has won the last 3 meetings, including a 71-47 last week at the AUM Sports Complex. The Warhawks (then known as the Senators) and the Lady Statesmen first met on Dec. 31, 1994, with AUM claiming a 111-75 win in Montgomery, Ala.  The two teams met again the next season in 1995 with AUM edging the Lady Statesmen 70-68 in Cleveland, Miss.  Delta State swept the two meetings last season, taking a 50-43 win on the road before a 76-56 win at Walter Sillers.

Nia Johnson scored in double-figure 11 times with a career-high 26 against Shorter (1.5.19).  Ernesha Chatman and Alondrea Rush have scored in double figures 7 times followed by Frederica Haywood with 6 double-figure games and Kirstin Brown with 3. Aliyah Herrod and Jordan Lenoir have 1 game in double figures.

Windex Ladies: The Lady Statesmen have out-rebounded their last 6 opponents by an average of +11.8, and have out-rebounded opponents in 16-of-21 games this year. Frederica Haywood has a team-high 7 double-figure rebounds games followed by Quantesha Patterson with 4 double-figure rebound games. Zyaire Ewing,  Kirstin Brown and Raven Johnson, who is out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury, have 2 double-figure rebound outings.

Nia Johnson is averaging 14.6 points and 2.1 assists followed by Quantesha Patterson with 11 points and 6.6 rebound per game.  Frederica Haywood averages 10.3 boards and 8.7 points per game. The Lady Statesmen are shooting 41.8 percent from the floor. 

Down The Stretch: Delta State has been clutch from the charity stripe in the final 5 minutes of games, shooting 77.8 percent (76-of-98) and 79.7 percent (51-of-64) in GSC play. For the season, the Lady Statesmen are shooting 69.7 percent.  Alondrea Rush is shooting 87.5 percent (91.7 GSC play) followed by Ernesha Chatman's 83.3 percent (10-of-12). and Nia Johnson's 76.7 percent down the stretch.
