Lady Statesmen Take Down #12 Illinois Springfield and #1 Southern Indiana

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Delta State softball was back on the road at the UAH Charger Chillout. The Lady Statesmen started the weekend with a with two games on Friday February 2nd, 2019, first taking on #12 University of Illinois Springfield at 12:00 pm and then #1 University of Southern Indiana at 5:30 pm.

DSU topped the #12 Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars 9-7. The impressive offensive performance was led by Ta'mya Johnson and Kailyn Lofton who each had two RBIs apiece.
The Lady Statesmen continued their offensive showcase against #1 Southern Indiana, defeating the Screaming Eagles 13-4. Delta State was led by Jordan Jones after she plated four runs off three hits in four plate appearances.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. Illinois Springfield (GM1)
  • Delta State was first on the board in the bottom of the second after Ta'mya Johnson reached home on the throw after Olivia Dick's single.
  • UIS took the lead in the top of the third after Kendra Peifer's two run single gave them a 2-1 lead.
  • The Lady Statesmen would quickly take back their lead after an RBI single by Johnson, a throwing error that resulted in two runs, and an RBI groundout by Kailyn Lofton in the bottom of the third gave DSU a 5-2 lead.
  • The Green and White would increase their lead to 8-2 in the fourth inning after Johnson plated one off a fielder's choice and Carlie Vice and Lofton each hit an RBI single.
  • Kelly Bird plated one more in the fifth after she drove in Abi Gibson, giving the Lady Statesmen a 9-2 lead.
  • The Prairie Stars would make a comeback in the seventh after a pair of RBI singles, a two-run double, and a sacrifice fly. After the ending the rally Lady Statesmen defeated Illinois Springfield 9-7.
 
ON THE MOUND vs. Illinois Springfield (GM1)
  • Delta State's Nicole Fullilove (3-1) received the win after giving up seven runs off six hits in seven innings of work.
  • Jay Craver (0-1) received the loss for Illinois Springfield after she gave six runs off nine hits in three 2/3 innings.
  • UIS' Payton Long came in to relive Craver, she gave up one run off two hits in two 1/3 innings.

 
NOTEABLES (GM1)
  • Johnson (2-4), Byrd (3-3), and Gibson (3-2) all had multi-hit games.
  • Lofton and Johnson each had two RBIs apiece.
  • Lady Statesmen out hit the Prairie Stars 11-6.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. Southern Indiana (GM2)
  • The Lady Statesmen took an early 5-1 lead in the first inning. The first run was driven in by Carlie Vice on a fielder's choice. Jordan Jones plated the next two runs after a single to left field. Vice then scored after an error by the short stop. The last run was plated by an RBI single Mari Alex Sandridge.
  • USI would score one run in the first inning. Katie Back reached home on an error.
  • Delta State scored four runs in the top of the second giving them a 9-1 lead. The first run was scored by Abi Gibson after an error. Jones would drive in another run after a double to right center. The last two runs of the inning were scored by Jones and Ashley Vickers on a pass ball.
  • DSU plated one run in the fourth inning after Sandridge's single to center field driving in Kailyn Lofton, giving the Lady Statesmen a 10-1 lead.
  • Southern Indiana scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The first run was scored by Kat Mueller after Mikaela Dominco grounded out to third. The second run was driven in by Claire Johnsons single to left. The last run for USI was plated by Elissa Brown's RBI single. The Screaming Eagles trailed DSU 10-4 after four innings of play.
  • The Lady Statesmen won by mercy rule with a score of 13-4 after scoring three more runs in the top of the fifth. The first run was scored after Jones drove in Gibson on an RBI single. Kelly Byrd scored the second run of the inning after a pass ball. Ta'mya Johnson drove in the final run off an RBI single.
 
ON THE MOUND vs. Southern Indiana (GM2)
  • Mari Alex Sandridge (3-0) received the win for the Lady statesmen after giving up four runs off eight hits in five innings of play.
  • Southern Indiana's Katie Back (0-1) got the loss after giving up nine runs, six earned, off six hits in one inning of work.
  • The Screaming Eagle's Elissa Brown came to relieve Back. She gave up four runs off seven hits in four innings.
 
NOTEABLES (GM2)
  • Byrd (3-3), Gibson (2-3), Jones (3-4), Johnson (2-4), and Sandridge (2-2) all had multiple hits for Delta State.
  • Sandridge and Vice each had two RBIs for the Lady Statesmen.
  • Jones had four RBIs for DSU.
  • Delta State out hit Southern Indiana 13-8.
 
Up Next:
The Lady Statesmen will be back on the diamond Saturday for a double header at the Charger Chillout. The first of the two contest is against West Liberty University at 3 p.m. and the second against Trevecca Nazarene University at 5 p.m.
