Lady Statesmen Fall Short in Games One and Two Against UWF

CLEVELAND, Miss – Delta State University Softball took on the Argonauts of the University of West Florida in a double header on Saturday, March 23, 2019. West Florida took game one 5-3 and game two 5-1.

How It Happened: Game 1
  • The Lady Argonauts were first on the board after plating 2 in the top of the third. Teala Howard scored the first run after a wild pitch.  Jacquelynne Poling plated the second run with an RBI single to right field.
  • UWF scored two more in the top of the fourth. Teala Howard drove in the first run with an RBI fielder's choice. Rhiannon Sassman's RBI single to left field was responsible for the second run.
  • The Lady Statesmen made it on the board in the bottom of the fifth after an error by the third basemen plated Kailyn Lofton.
  • A home run to left field by Mari Alex Sandridge cut the UWF lead 2-4.
  • Kathleen Smiley crossed the plate in the top of the seventh after an error by the second baseman.
  • Kelly Byrd scored one more run for the Lady Statesmen in the bottom of the seventh after an error by the shortstop.
     
In the Circle: Game 1
  • Nicole Fullilove (11-7) received the loss for DSU. Fullilove threw a complete seven innings, giving up five runs off nine hits and striking out three.
  • Grace Gilbert (11-2) got the win for UWF. Gilbert gave up three runs off eight hits through seven innings.
 
Beyond the Box Score: Game 1
  • Sandridge's home run in the bottom of the sixth was her first home run of the season.
  • Lofton (3-3) and Carlie Vice (2-4) both had multiple hit games for DSU.
 
How It Happened: Game 2
  • UWF took an early lead after plating two in the top of the first. Courtney Mclellan plated the first Argo run with an RBI single to left field. Ally Merril's RBI fielder's choice scored the second.
  • The Argonauts extended their lead 5-0 in the top of the third. Smiley drove in the first two runs with a two run single. Merrill plated the third run with an RBI double.
  • The Lady Statesmen scored their only run in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a home run from Ta'mya Johnson.
 
In the Circle: Game 2
  • Brittany Taylor (1-2) received the loss for the Lady Statesmen. Taylor gave up five runs off five hits after throwing two and 1/3 innings.
  • Mari Alex Sandridge relived Taylor in the third inning. Sandridge only gave up two hits while striking out a pair of Argos through four and 1/3 innings.
  • Kelsey Sweatt (10-1) got the win for UWF. Sweatt gave up one run off five hits through seven innings.
 
Beyond the Box Score: GM2
  • Johnson's home run in the bottom of the seventh was her third of the season.
 
Up Next:
  • On Sunday March, 24th Delta State Softball will play game three of their series against the University of West Florida.  First pitched is scheduled to be thrown at 1 pm.
