Lady Statesmen Drop Two on Senior Day

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen were swept in a double header against the University of West Alabama on Sunday afternoon. It is the fourth series in which the Lady Statesmen have suffered a double header loss at home this season. The Lady Statesmen also celebrated senior day honor five seniors before the games. Abi Gibson, Jordan Jones, Brittany Taylor, Nicole Fullilove, and Kelly Byrd were honored before the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
GAME 1
  • Nicole Fullilove started out strong as she retired the first six batters for UWA.
  • Mallory Myers had a single to lead the game off but was stranded at third.
  • In the third, UWA got on the board after Kacy Noland drove in Kailey Hunt to give UWA the 1-0.
  • Delta Staet answered in the bottom of the third when Myers had another single and then Abi Gibson drove her in.
  • In the sixth, Kendal Johnson was hit by a pitch for UWA and eventually came in to score the winning run of the game.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Olivia Dick got to third for DSU but was stranded there to end the game.
GAME 2
  • West Alabama struck early in game two. The Tigers had three singles and then Mari Alex Sandridge threw eight straight balls to walk in two runs.
  • In the third UWA used two doubles and a single to score three more runs.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Abi Gibson reached second on an error and Jones drove her in to make it 5-1.
  • In the bottom of the sixth Jordan Jones had a to run homerun scoring Kelly Byrd to make it a 5-4 game.
  • In the seventh, Mallory Myers had a triple to score Taylor Picou and make it a one run game but that was it for the game.
 
 
ON THE MOUND:
  • Fullilove in game one went seven innings giving up only two hits and two runs while striking out five.
  • Nora Keehn won game one. She only allowed one run on six hits
  • In game two Mar Alex Sandridge went three innings, gave up six hits and five runs with three earned. She also walked three and struck out four.
  • Emily Baker came in relief and threw four innings only giving up two hits.
  • Carleigh Mills picked up the win in game two while Nora Keehn earned a save for UWA.
 
  • NOTEABLES:
  • The Lady Statesmen have lost four straight games.
  • Jordan Jones hit her sixth home run of the season.
  • Mallory Myers had three hits in game one and one hit in game two.

• The Lady Statesmen will be back in action on Monday at 1 pm against UWA.
