Lady Statesmen Earn Split With #25 Mississippi College

Clinton, Miss. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen split a Saturday afternoon double header with #25 Mississippi College. The Lady Statesmen lost game one 3-0 then rebounded with clutch hitting in game two to win 8-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
GAME 1
  • Nicole Fullilove started out strong as she only allowed one runner in the first inning and had one strikeout.
  • In the second inning MC had one runner get on by an error and then Grace Trahan hit a two run homerun to give the Lady Choctaws the lead.
  • In the third, the Lady Statesmen loaded the bases but could not bring a run across.
  • In the next three innings for DSU they only managed two hits while MC had only one hit.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, MC got a run on a throwing error by Fullilove and got the third run of the game.
  • In the seventh, DSU got a hit as well but left the runner on base.
GAME 2
  • In game two, MC got on the board first with back to back walks with the bases loaded and lead 2-0.
  • The Lady Statesmen answered in the top of the third with three runs to take the lead. Three straight singles from Abi Gibson, Kelly Byrd, and Jordan Jones brought in a run.
  • Then Ta'mya Johnson drove in a run. Followed by Kailyn Lofton getting a run in as well off of an error.
  • In the bottom of the third, MC answered with another run to make it 3-3.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Annemarie Peavy hit a two run home run to put the Lady Choctaws up 5-3.
  • Then in the fifth for the Green and White, they scored five times to make it 8-5.
  • Byrd had a single, followed by a single from Jones.
  • Johnson got on via an error after that and then Lofton was walked and had a RBI.
  • Mari Alex Sandridge grounded out but had an RBI as well.
  • Taylor Picou singled to bring in a run as well. That was followed by Carlie Vice who had a single as well and a RBI.
  • Abi Gibson then came back up for the second time and brought in her first RBI.
  • Nicole Fullilove came in relief and got the save for DSU striking out two of the last three batters.
 
 
 
ON THE MOUND:
  • Fullilove in game one went all seven innings giving up only two hits and three runs with none of those earned. She walked four and struck out four.
  • Cori Cooper picked up her 12th win of the season for MC striking out nine DSU batters in the process.
  • In game two, Emily Baker got the start going three innings giving up four hits, five runs, five walks, and one strikeout.
  • Sandridge earned the victory going one inning and only giving up a walk. She earned her eighth victory of the season.
  • Fullilive got the save throwing three innings, giving up three hits and striking out three.
     
    NOTEABLES:
  • The Lady Statesmen had only one extra base hit in each game.
  • DSU is now 4-7 in games they have scored more than seven runs.
  • The Lady Statesmen are now 3-17 after trailing in the fourth inning.
  • Game one was the fifth time this season the Lady Statesmen have been shutout.
 
Up Next:
• The Lady Statesmen will be back in action on for the regular season finale. A win would automatically clinch a berth in the GSC Tournament. If they lose, Montevallo would have to beat UAH twice to get in.
