Go Green Weekend - is almost here and this year's event is the largest ever planned for fans, alumni and friends of the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen! Five days of food, fun and fellowship are in-store for the
#DSUFamily. A complete list of events is below.
"This year's go Green Weekend is really a week-long celebration of the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen," director of athletics
Mike Kinnison said. "In making plans for this year's schedule, we wanted to have events that would build the energy towards the weekend's activities and I believe we have done that. I want to encourage all fans, alumni and community members to make plans to attend this week's events and I look forward to seeing you on Go Green Weekend!"
The annual Bolivar County Delta State Alumni Association Crawfish Boil will be held on Thursday, April 11 on the quad at Sillers Coliseum and the event will officially kickoff Go Green Weekend. The family-friendly tailgating-type event will take place at 5:30 PM. On the menu: crawfish and BBQ. Children age 12 and younger eat free pizza courtesy of Domino's. Kids also can play in bounce houses. The musical lineup: Cleveland Central High School Jazz Band at 5:30 PM and The InsideOut Band, covering classic soul and rock, at 6:30 PM. The king and queen of the crawfish boil will be announced at 6 PM.
Proceeds benefit the Liza Vaughn Memorial Scholarship. Awarded annually to incoming Delta State students from Bolivar County, the scholarship, formerly known as the Bolivar County Alumni Chapter Scholarship, is named for former Assistant Alumni Director Liza Jordan Vaughn who lost her battle with cancer in April 2012. Friday, April 12 will be a big day for the Green-and-White, as the campus hosts Preview Day for graduating seniors and their families from across the state and region. Campus and facility tours will take place throughout the day. For more information on Spring Preview Day, please click here. Â
On Friday, April 12 at 2 PM, DSU Athletics will host student filmmakers and siblings Matteo Zengaro and Elisabetta Zengaro for the campus premiere of their documentary "Coach Wade" inside the Recital Hall at the Bologna Performing Arts Center. A reception will follow the screening. Coach Wade, a 33-minute documentary chronicling life of legendary Delta State women's basketball coach Margaret Wade, made its world premiere the Oxford (Miss.) Film Festival in February.
Saturday's festivities get started at 10 AM, as Delta State officially dedicates the Ronald G. Mayers Aquatics Center. The ceremony will take place on the Mayers Aquatics Center South Patio with a reception to follow. The campus and community are cordially invited to attend.Â
At 7 PM on Saturday, Delta State University's Student Government Association presents Okra Fest! This outdoor concert will be held at Sillers Coliseum from 7-10 PM and features country entertainer Corey Smith and acclaimed rapper Rich Homie Quan.Â
Due to forecasted rains on Saturday, Lady Statesmen Softball and Statesmen Baseball will open their respective series with the University of West Alabama on Sunday. Softball will begin at 2 PM with a doubleheader at University Field while the Statesmen will play a single game at 3 PM at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field. Both programs will honor their seniors prior to the start of Sunday's events.
During Sunday's game at Harvey-Stadium Ferriss Field, DSU Athletics will host a special Statesmen Club Social from 3-5 PM down the right field line. Information on the revamped program, which feature seven distinct giving levels, 2019-2020 ticket information and DSU Athletics apparel will be available. Light snacks and beverages will also be available. The social is free and open to everyone.Â
Go Green Weekend wraps up on Monday at 1 PM, as the Lady Statesmen and West Alabama conclude the series at University Field, and the Statesmen and Tigers close their three-game series with a doubleheader at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.
