Lady Statesmen Fall to UWF in First Round of GSC Tournament

Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – The #8 seed Delta State University Lady Statesmen fell in five innings Thursday night by a final score of 10-2 with the #1 seed West Florida Argonauts in the final game of the opening day of the 2019 GSC Softball Tournament. The Lady Statesmen will play an elimination game against Valdosta State on Friday afternoon at 12:30.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
AT THE PLATE:
  • In the first, the Argos took advantage of two hit batters, a passed ball, and a walk bringing in three runs.
  • In the top of the second, DSU got two runners on, but Olivia Dick limed into a double play with Kailyn Lofton being caught off of first.
  • The Argos added a fourth run in the second inning after a double from Meeka Garcia and then Rachel Wright getting on via an error. With Garcia scoring on the error.
  • DSU got on the board in the third. Carlie Vice got a single to start the inning.
  • Next, Katelyn Carcich was hit by a pitch.
  • Mallory Myers laid down a perfect bunt and loaded the bases.
  • Abi Gibson was walked and brought in Vice.
  • Kelly Byrd then hit a single in the infield to score Carcich to make it 4-2.
  • The next three batters could not bring in another run in the third.
  • In the fourth, UWF got another run to make it 5-2, however Vice threw out a base runner to end the inning.
  • UWF added a sixth run in the fourth on a walk and two hits.
  • In the fifth, UWF added four runs on six hits and two errors to end the game early.
ON THE MOUND:
  • The starter Nicole Fullilove only managed to go two and one third innings giving up five runs on four hits. She three walks and two hit batters as well.
  • Mari Alex Sandridge came in relief going one and two thirds innings giving up six hits and five runs as well.
  • Emily Baker ended the giving up one hit.
  •  For UWF, Grace Gilbert went five innings, four hits, and two runs while striking out four.
     
    NOTABLES:
  • This is the second straight season UWF has defeated DSU in the GSC tournament. Last year UWF won in Florence, Ala. 5-4.
  • This will also be the second straight tournament facing Valdosta State in the tournament as well.

  

UP NEXT:
The Lady Statesmen will be back in action on for their second game of the GSC Tournament on Friday. They will face Valdosta State at 12:30 PM.
